Ginger is correct, the test is a PCR test - the gold standard for testing. But this is not a do-it-yourself test, it is a collection kit. You receive the supplies you need to collect your saliva sample, collect the sample while being observed via ZOOM, and send your sample to a lab (Infinity BiologiX - CAP accredited). Results should be available 48-72 hours after the laboratory receives the sample. Collecting at home is a benefit as it removes the potential for getting infected (or infecting others) by going to a collection site. The difficulty is that the result indicates the presence or absence of the virus in your sample at the time it was collected. By the time you get the results back, you might have become infected or your infection might have resolved.
Stay safe and well,Tracy(your friendly neighborhood laboratorian)

I checked the efficacy of this test (Vault - at home - provided by WI Dept of Health Services) and it is as accurate as the nasal swab tests they provide at drive through places. Have one on hand in case you need to know if you’ve been infected. You’ll find more answers here.

It depends on the home test. The new one being developed by the Biden administration is 97% accurate, which is a bet I’d be willing to take. The one used by the Trump White House was only 80% accurate, which is why the place was a petri dish for COVID.

Dear Friends,Thanks to Ginger Goral, I was made aware that free COVID-19 test kits are available. While we wait to be fully vaccinated, using a free test kit is a way small groups of friends and family can know they are safe to gather inside.Fran Billshttps://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/collection.htm
