Subject: Two Major Opportunities This Week!
Dear WISDOM Leaders:
I hope the official start of summer finds you well. I am writing to invite you to two exciting things this week. And, I ask you to share these with members of your organizations who might be interested.
1. Our "Summer of Solidarity" continues. This coming Saturday (June 27), we will be looking at the issue of Immigrant Detention Centers. The event will be from 10 am to 12 noon. To register for the event, click here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcrcu-hrz8tE9OXjy5VZKEnNaEcFf3Insq2 When you fill out the little form, you will receive an email with the link to use on Saturday morning.
In WISDOM, we have been doing a pretty good job so far of bringing attention to the fact that there are many, many men and women who ought not be in our jails and prisons, especially in the time of a global pandemic (see below). This Saturday, we will be looking at another group of our brothers and sisters who ought not be in cages in the first place, but who are at special risk for COVID-19. And, we will learn how we in Wisconsin have a special responsibility for them.
This past Saturday's Summer of Solidarity program, about Racism in Suburban Schools, was attended by more than 100 people. Let's keep that momentum going. We will be free when all of us are free.
2. Join us on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at 6 p.m. on the EXPO Facebook page<https://click.everyaction.com/k/17949977/211930310/2082763093?nvep=ew0KICAiVGVuYW50VXJpIjogIm5ncHZhbjovL3Zhbi9FQS9FQTAwMy8xLzcyMzExIiwNCiAgIkRpc3RyaWJ1dGlvblVuaXF1ZUlkIjogImU4ZWJjNTk1LTNiYjMtZWExMS05YjA1LTAwMTU1ZDAzOWU3NCIsDQogICJFbWFpbEFkZHJlc3MiOiAiZGF2aWRsX3dpc2RvbUBzYmNnbG9iYWwubmV0Ig0KfQ%3D%3D&hmac=3t_WtnBjsP0VoCAKGZ0zfeJsuArkI8849KnCf-AW6GU=&emci=ad6868c0-05b3-ea11-9b05-00155d039e74&emdi=e8ebc595-3bb3-ea11-9b05-00155d039e74&ceid=6988487> to join the conversation on "Does Governor Evers care about people in prison?"
This webinar will build on the amazing "Drive to Decarcerate" event last Thursday. Hundreds of WISDOM members and friends drove to Madison and formed a caravan that circled the Capitol building on its way to the Governor's mansion. There we made clear our demand that Governor Evers act to deal with our overcrowded prisons during the pandemic. The event got a lot of media attention, and seems to have caught the attention of the Governor. Join us Wednesday to help ensure that the effort doesn't stop there, and that we keep it going until the Governor actually takes action to release elderly and sick prisoners, and enough low-risk people that those who remain in prison have a chance to observe social distancing.
Finally, to get your "I Care About People in Prison. Does Governor Evers Care?" yard sign and be a conversation starter in your neighborhood, please email EXPO organizer Peggy West at peggywest4expo at gmail.com<mailto:peggywest4expo at gmail.com> to arrange to get one.
