One more bit of info if you want to check it out re: a Native tribe.
I just happened to cross this a few weeks back .
Of course it made me even more depressed about the current Administration
and white people in general, and made me realize that there are still
tribes out there not only fighting to keep their lands but in this case
also their classification as Indian! Interesting that one of the
qualifications is that they have to have been under Federal jurisdiction!
Not that they've been on the land for 10,000 years and welcomed the
Pilgrims! (who then almost eliminated them with disease and took their
land!)

The following is a recent update with the Court ruling that will stay the
action initiated by the DOI. However,
the Mashpee-Wampanoag tribe's fight to guarantee permanent status as well
as control over their land is not over.
