 WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY

100 years ago, on August 26th 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was certified, giving voting rights to women. This was the largest expansion of the franchise in the nation's history -- and the first step in a struggle that continues to this day to ensure voting rights for all citizens. The date was later named Women's Equality Day. The occasion was celebrated in 1920 with bells ringing at noon throughout the state.

This year on August 26, the League of Women Voters is replicating the celebration of a century ago by requesting that bells be rung at noon for one minute.

The League of Women Voters is also asking for buildings with changeable colored lights to light up in suffragist purple and gold on the evening of the 26th. In addition, we're asking owners of electronic or changeable signs to promote the message: 19th Amendment August 26, 1920: women gain the vote. One victory for equal voting rights. The fight continues...The Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Historical Society, and Fiserv Forum, and freeway overpasses will light up in suffragist purple and gold.

Peggy Creer, president
League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County

 UPCOMING EVENTS:

On Thursday, August 27th at 7pm, James L. Santelle unpacks recent decisions of our High Court, addressing the meaning and impact of the Constitution's protections against governmental establishment of religion and preservations of the right to its free exercise. James is the former United States Attorney for the Eastern Disctrict of Wisconsin and a good friend to the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee. He has offered to present a virtual, academic and interactive program to explore how these changes affect our faith members and organizations. Join the conversation during the Q & A.

Tune in to Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee Facebook page for an invitation post coming later this week.
