This was the largest expansion of the franchise in the nation's history -- and the first step in a struggle that continues to this day to ensure voting rights for all citizens. The date was later named Women's Equality Day. The occasion was celebrated in 1920 with bells ringing at noon throughout the state. </span></span></p><p style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"> </p><p style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This year on August 26, the League of Women Voters is replicating the celebration of a century ago by requesting that bells be rung at noon for one minute.</span></span></p><p style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"> </p><p style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The League of Women Voters is also asking for buildings with changeable colored lights to light up in suffragist purple and gold on the evening of the 26th. In addition, we're asking owners of electronic or changeable signs to promote the message: <em>19th Amendment August 26, 1920: women gain the vote. One victory for equal voting rights.
