| Yesterday, Wisconsin's Secretary of Corrections, Kevin Carr, announced some major steps to be taken in Wisconsin's prison system.  Some of these have to do with steps to safeguard the health of both employees and incarcerated people, as well as extra opportunities for free phone calls to loved ones and access to canteen items. The biggest news is that he ordered the immediate release of 1,148 people who were being held on "revocation holds."  An additional 68 people were released from the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility who had been held on an "alternative to revocation".  He further ordered the expedited release of everyone eligible for Earned Release who would be expected to be out in less than a year. On behalf of Rev. Brisco and WISDOM, we have sent a message of appreciation to Secretary Carr.  These steps might very well have saved many lives. This is a step in the right direction.  There is still a lot more to be done -- expedited Compassionate Release and Parole, for example.  And, it would still be important for the Governor to publicly endorse these measures and call for more steps to be taken to get our prison population down to a level where they can truly be safe. |
