Summer events offer a multitude of programs promoting cultural diversity and racial justice
After every program we’ve ever sponsored, the most common reaction of attendees has been [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/df04ef54-dbb7-47c4-bbd9-dc911341a064.jpg] “What can I do?” Well, if you visit our Rid Racism Milwaukee Facebook page Calendar of Events, you’ll find listings of 188 special events being offered in the Metro Milwaukee community between now and the end of summer. Some of these events are specifically focused on issues related to racial justice, while others are simply a celebration of racial/cultural diversity. And the good news is that more than 90% of these events are FREE!
This issue of our newsletter offers just a sampling of those 188 events with a reminder that we can learn a lot and better connect with each other through art, literature, film, dance, theater and music as well as cultural/ethnic festivals and community block parties. Want to become more engaged as a racial justice advocate? Check out some of these events and make an effort to get up, get out and get engaged.
Be a little adventurous and explore communities beyond your own neighborhood. It’s summertime and there’s never a better time to get out and about – whether you’re drawn to a book discussion, salsa classes, a cultural festival, sampling a new ethnic restaurant or joining a racial justice campaign.
We’ve packed so many opportunities into this newsletter that we decided to group the events into categories to help you peruse and cruise through all the announcements to find programs of special interest to you. To see the complete list of events on our Facebook page, click on this link<http://ridracism-mke.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef&id=ffc6dd9db7&e=b541381f55> and be sure to “like” the page if you wish to receive regular updates of our postings of news, articles and events.
Because August alone has more than 100 events, RID will take a “vacation” from programming that month, but we will resume on September 7, when we begin our 3-part Fall Book Club discussion of the Rev. Dr. William Barber’s The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement is Overcoming the Division of Politics and Fear.
Lastly, we encourage you to forward this newsletter to others in your network who might share your interest in being a racial justice ally. Thank you! And have a great summer!

2) Reggie Jackson’s presentation on Hidden Impact of Segregation scheduled July 23 and Aug. 9
Reggie Jackson, Head Griot (oral historian) of America’s Black Holocaust Museum and board member[https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/a9753a4f-7789-4326-8075-91d60c0f1b8b.jpg] of Rid Racism MKE, will be giving two free presentations based on the talks about segregation that have been packing venues from Shorewood to Waukesha to Milwaukee's Southside. If you haven’t yet heard this powerful presentation, we hope you can attend one of these two programs in Mequon July 23 or Milwaukee Aug. 9!
His presentation, tailored to each neighborhood or city where he speaks, examines the role played by national and local policies and social systems. These systems have promoted and maintained an artificial separation between white and black citizens – and other residents of color. Finally, he explains how segregation negatively impacts the economic and social well-being of all the residents of this region. The talk is followed by a Q & A session.

4) Alice Garden’s Black Lives Matter event
at 5:30 pm July 26, 2136 N 21st St
In the immediate aftermath of the fatal 2016 police shooting of Philando Castile in a Minnesota suburb,[https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/9589afd7-6f9f-48d0-8047-c7202e28b380.jpg] there were heartwrenching moments shared in the back of a police car between Castile's girlfriend and her daughter. The video released shows Diamond Reynolds with her four-year-old daughter. An emotional Reynolds is heard shouting an expletive, and her daughter pleads with her to be quiet so that she won't "get shooted." Later, when Reynolds says she wishes she could take her handcuffs off, her daughter again implores: "No, please don’t, I don’t want you to get shooted."
These pain-filled words "I Don't Want You To Get Shooted” will be the theme for our Second Annual Black Lives Matter event at Alice's Garden Urban Farm. Join us as we lift up community voices and concerns as we all struggle to find our way through the, too-often, lack of justice and compassion in this nation for Black people.

3) Expert Q&A: How to Turn Growing Support into Action for Closing Youth Prisons – Facebook Live Presentation July 26
Join us for a Facebook Live presentation sponsored by Youth First Initiative featuring a pollster and [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/b238baf9-e390-46d4-add5-9bd3cc28014f.jpg] progressive communications strategist for a discussion on the right messages to turn growing support for closing youth prisons into action. The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, July 26 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. CDT. New research shows that a majority of people of all backgrounds believe that youth prisons don’t work and are open to alternatives that are proven to work better – but as activists, we need to find the most effective way to convince them to take action and support juvenile justice reform in their communities and states.

4) Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee
sponsors “Fire Inside” discussion August 7
The Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee (IWOC) is sponsoring a “Fire Inside” discussion on [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/ea7c6025-7879-4c6b-97e7-c7a19ce59ae7.jpg] Monday, August 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Milwaukee Public Library at 310 W. Locust St., Milwaukee. The program will include discussion about ending prison slavery and supporting rebellions and resistance with organizers of the historic September 9th 2016 nationally coordinated prisoner strike and protest and prisoner leaders calling in from inside.
Organizers say:
“There is a fire seething in U.S. prisons. September 9th of 2016 saw some of the largest prisoner rebellions in history. This August, prisoners are calling to fan the flames up again. Participants in last year’s mass mobilization and nationally coordinated prisoner protest are calling for another wave of actions starting on August 19th of this year. In order to succeed and combat the brutal repression prison rebels face there must be robust, visible, and widespread support on the outside. To that end, we’re putting out a reportback zine and organizing speaking tours to distribute it.” For more information, call 414-286-3000.

The purpose of NOSL is to redefine and reimagine what safety is<http://ridracism-mke.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef&id=c140f6cb02&e=b541381f55> for our communities – beyond crime, policing, and fear. According to NOSL, "Safety is a concern shared by all, and this campaign is your opportunity to share what it means for you and your community. Is it access to healthcare, a learning environment free of violence, a positive workplace and living wage, or freedom to just be without fear? Let’s not limit our view of safety as the policing of our neighborhoods. We must redefine, reimagine, and determine for ourselves what safety is."
Organizers represent a prospective Black and Pink group located in Milwaukee dedicated to supporting and raising awareness towards LGBTQ and other prisoners. Currently incarcerated can send general postal mail, letters, artwork, and requests to: Black and Pink: Milwaukee,

6) The Criminalization of Self-Defense Teach In
set for August 19
“The Criminalization of Self-Defense Teach In” will be hosted by Black and Pink: Milwaukee on [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/be93d64e-da70-4abf-baec-c86af290124b.jpg] Saturday, August 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Milwaukee Public Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee. Come learn about the ways that survivors of violence are criminalized for acts of survival and find out how you can take action against this violence.
According to Survived & Punished, "For many survivors, the experiences of domestic violence, rape, and other forms of gender violence are bound up with systems of incarceration and police violence. According to the ACLU, nearly 60% of people in women’s prison nationwide, and as many as 94% of some women’s prison populations, have a history of physical or sexual abuse before being incarcerated.
Once incarcerated or detained, many women (including trans women) and trans & gender non-conforming people experience sexual violence from guards and others. Being controlled by police, prosecutors, judges, immigration enforcement, homeland security, detention centers, and prisons is often integrated with the experience of domestic violence and sexual assault. This is especially true for Black, Native, and immigrant survivors."

BOOK DISCUSSION EVENTS (3):
1) Rid Racism Fall Book Club: The Third Reconstruction
set for September 7, 14, 21
Join Rid Racism Milwaukee members on Thursday, Sept. 7 to kick off our first of three evening [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/ace9af63-2e05-421c-9362-3f0019c33605.jpg] discussions around the book, The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement is Overcoming the Division of Politics and Fear by the Rev. Dr. William Barber II. Follow-up discussions will be held Sept 14 & 21. Sessions will be held 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Bethesda Church, 2810 W. Highland Blvd., Milwaukee 53208.
About the book:
Over the summer of 2013, Rev. Dr. William Barber led more than 100,000 people in rallies across North Carolina to protest cuts to voting rights and the social safety net, implemented by the state’s conservative legislature. These protests came to be known as Moral Mondays. Moral Mondays blossomed into the largest social movement the South has seen since the civil rights era and has since spread to other states, including Wisconsin.
In The Third Reconstruction, Rev. Barber tells the story of how he helped lay the groundwork for the Moral Mondays movement and explores the unfulfilled promises of America’s multiethnic democracy. He draws on the lessons of history to offer a vision of a new Reconstruction, one in which a diverse coalition of citizens—black and white, religious and secular, Northern and Southern—fight side-by-side for racial and economic justice for all Americans. The book is both a blueprint for activism and an inspiring call to action from a highly effective grassroots organizer.
About the book club discussion:
Please note that participants will need to order their own books and bring the book to each session. The first reading assignment is to read the Prologue and first THREE chapters to prepare for the first session on Sept. 7. Beverages and light snacks will be provided. A one-time $15 donation (to be paid at the first session) is suggested to cover the cost of the meeting space and food for all three sessions.
LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE! PLEASE BE SURE TO GET TICKETS TODAY!
We hope that you will join the club. Get inspired to come together and take on the issues of racism that continue to haunt our city.

Margy Stratton, founder and executive producer of Milwaukee Reads, produces this series of events featuring writers of particular interest to women.
Hum If You Don't Know the Words is a perceptive and searing look at Apartheid-era South Africa, told through one unique family brought together by tragedy. Life under Apartheid has created a secure future for Robin Conrad, a ten-year-old white girl living with her parents in 1970s Johannesburg. In the same nation but worlds apart, Beauty Mbali, a Xhosa woman in a rural village in the Bantu homeland of the Transkei, struggles to raise her children alone after her husband's death.
Both lives have been built upon the division of race, and their meeting should never have occurred... until the Soweto Uprising, in which a protest by black students ignites racial conflict, alters the fault lines on which their society is built and shatters their worlds when Robin's parents are left dead and Beauty's daughter goes missing.
Told through Beauty and Robin's alternating perspectives, the interwoven narratives create a rich and complex tapestry of the emotions and tensions at the heart of Apartheid-era South Africa. Hum If You Don't Know the Words is a beautifully rendered look at loss, racism, and the creation of family. 1) “The Who and the What”, Sept. 27-November 5, Stiemke Studio
>From the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Disgraced and The Invisible [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/c5e9044b-4145-4e4e-9fe5-abaa0c0d7d57.png] Hand comes a thrillingly fierce and funny new play about identity, religion, and the contradictions that make us who we are. Growing up Muslim with her close-knit family in Atlanta, Zarina is writing about women and Islam when she meets Eli, a young convert who bridges the gap between her modern life and traditional heritage. When her conservative father and sister discover her controversial manuscript, they all must confront the beliefs that define them. Called “a play not be missed” by the Chicago Tribune, The Who & The What is a passionate and searing look at a family divided by faith, bonded by love, and searching for truth in contemporary America.
2) “Black Pearl Sings: The Song Is the Story”, Jan. 19 - March 18, 2018, Stackner Caberet[https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/45efa8c4-f3f0-4674-b5a7-4cebe6604812.jpg]
Music unites strangers and bridges racial divisions in this powerful story based on real life events. It’s 1933, and an ambitious song collector for the Library of Congress visits a Texas prison where she meets Pearl, an African-American woman with a soulful voice and steely spirit. Featuring more than a dozen beautiful a cappella renditions of spirituals and American folk songs, Black Pearl Sings! explores what it means to be a woman in a man’s world, being black in a white world, and fighting for one’s soul in a world where anyone can be a commodity. BroadwayWorld describes the play as “…a vivid reminder that the things that connect us are often stronger than the things which divide us.”
3) “One House Over”, February 27 – March 25, 2018, Quadracci Powerhouse
When Rafael and Camila Hernandez move in downstairs to help Joanne with [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/75117951-6a9f-434d-876b-69d4b78095b9.jpg] her elderly father, Joanne breathes a little easier. She needs their help, and they need jobs. But she can’t anticipate the complications that arise when “the help” starts to feel like family…and act like it. A brilliantly funny and provocative new piece by one of today’s hottest playwrights, it’s an empathetic but searing examination of boundaries, power, privilege, and fear in a single backyard.
4) “Until the Flood” -- A New Play Ripped From The Headlines, March 13 – April 22, 2018, Stiemke Studio
>From Pulitzer Prize finalist and celebrated performer Dael Orlandersmith (Yellowman), com[https://gallery.mailchimp.com/bc3f38db2afccca1615f7d7ef/images/db566b43-95a2-48d9-9b0f-e344a14ec933.jpg]es an extraordinary theatrical event that explores the reactions of the St. Louis region to the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. After conducting hundreds of interviews, Orlandersmith crafted a stunning play featuring eight real-life characters, all with unique and interesting perspectives. These stories reflect a range of human experiences – the drive to forward one’s prospects with education, the innate need to protect our loved ones from the harsh realities of the world and the urge to seek answers to life’s biggest questions. The result is a theatrical mosaic of diverse voices that explores how a community heals and grows together.
