can I do?” Well, if you visit our Rid Racism Milwaukee Facebook page Calendar of Events, you’ll find listings of 188 special events being offered in the Metro Milwaukee community between now and the end of summer. Some of these events are specifically focused
on issues related to racial justice, while others are simply a celebration of racial/cultural diversity. And the good news is that more than 90% of these events are FREE!

This issue of our newsletter offers just a sampling of those 188 events with a reminder that we can learn a lot and better connect with each other through art,

Be a little adventurous and explore communities beyond your own neighborhood. It’s summertime and there’s never a better time to get out and about – whether you’re drawn to a book discussion, salsa classes, a cultural festival, sampling a new ethnic restaurant

We’ve packed so many opportunities into this newsletter that we decided to group the events into categories to help you peruse and cruise through all the announcements to find programs of special interest to you.

About the book:
Over the summer of 2013, Rev. Dr. William Barber led more than 100,000 people in rallies across North Carolina to protest cuts to voting rights and the social safety net, implemented by the state’s conservative legislature. These protests came to be known as
Moral Mondays. Moral Mondays blossomed into the largest social movement the South has seen since the civil rights era and has since spread to other states, including Wisconsin.

In The Third Reconstruction, Rev. Barber tells the story of how he helped lay the groundwork for the Moral Mondays movement and explores the unfulfilled promises of America’s multiethnic democracy. He draws on the lessons of history to offer a vision
of a new Reconstruction, one in which a diverse coalition of citizens—black and white, religious and secular, Northern and Southern—fight side-by-side for racial and economic justice for all Americans. The book is both a blueprint for activism and an inspiring
call to action from a highly effective grassroots organizer.
Through the voices of three 53206 residents, the film allows us to witness the human toll of mass incarceration, especially of African American men, on families and the community. With 62% of its adult men having spent time in prison, Milwaukee’s Zip code
53206 is a microcosm of the daily realities of those affected by mass incarceration in America. The film illuminates the story of people from across the United States who live with the daily effects of mass incarceration. More information about the film, including
