If you are opposed to the "Big Betrayal Bill" that was passed in the House
and is soon going to be voted on in the Senate, and aren't sure how to act,
consider going to 5calls.org. They list some of the most appalling things
in the bill and give simple guidance on how to call your Senators,
including a script and phone numbers. It literally takes a few minutes.
Our senators need to hear loud and clear opposition to this outrageous bill
that not only will hurt people on Medicaid and massively increase funding
for ICE, but sells off tons of public land and guts climate protection. I
recently also heard that it allows no restrictions or regulation on AI for
10 years.
Below are some of the things in the bill. Let's all call every day until
they vote. Thank you! Kerry
In May, House Republicans passed <https://clerk.house.gov/Votes/2025145> their
partisan budget reconciliation bill, H.R. 1
<https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/1> the “One Big
Beautiful Bill Act,” that will increase budget deficits by $2.4 trillion
<https://www.cbo.gov/publication/61461> to finance trillions in tax cuts
for the wealthy
<https://www.cbsnews.com/news/congressional-budget-office-cbo-estimate-trump-big-beautiful-bill-deficit-health-insurance/>.
This bill would enact the largest transfer of wealth from the poor the rich
<https://archive.is/jG4bM> in decades.
Senate Republicans are now rewriting portions of the bill to satisfy strict
Senate parliamentarian rules
<https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/RL30862> while
also maintaining the House’s partisan wish list framework. These harmful
provisions include:
- Deep cuts to Medicaid
<https://5calls.org/issue/medicaid-cuts-budget-reconciliation/>,
including harsh new work requirements
- New Medicare eligibility rules and increased costs for dual
Medicaid-Medicare enrollees
<https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/senate-republicans-release-trump-agenda-bill-text-medicaid-medicare-sa-rcna213243>
- Tripling the budget for ICE
<https://5calls.org/issue/ice-mass-deportation-budget-reconciliation/> and
Trump’s mass deportation effort
- Authorization for the sale of public lands
<https://5calls.org/issue/public-land-sales-budget-reconcilliation/> and
increased incentives for fossil fuel production
- Widespread rollback of clean energy tax incentives and climate
protections
<https://5calls.org/issue/clean-energy-cuts-budget-reconciliation/>
- Unprecedented funding cuts and expansion of work requirements for SNAP
<https://5calls.org/issue/snap-cuts-budget-reconciliation/>
- Limits on a court’s ability to issue temporary restraining orders or
preliminary injunctions
<https://5calls.org/issue/court-contempt-enforcement-cuts-budget-reconciliation/>
- Funding cuts to clinical care services at Planned Parenthood
<https://5calls.org/issue/planned-parenthood-funding-budget-reconciliation/>
and gender-affirming care
<https://5calls.org/issue/transgender-healthcare-budget-reconciliation/> for
Medicaid and CHIP recipients
- Requiring states block all AI regulation for 10 years
<https://5calls.org/issue/ai-regulation-ban-budget-reconciliation/> in
order to receive federal broadband funding
- A $150 billion increase to an already bloated Pentagon budget
<https://5calls.org/issue/pentagon-trillion-dollar-budget-reconciliation/>
- A national private school voucher program
<https://5calls.org/issue/educational-choice-for-children-act-ecca/> that
diverts funding from public schools and sets up a new tax shelter for the
wealthy
- An increased excise tax on college endowments
<https://5calls.org/issue/higher-education-university-endowments-budget-reconciliation/>
- Widespread changes to student loan access, protections, and repayment
options
<https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/15/student-loan-defaults-may-spike-under-senate-gop-plan-expert-says.html>
- Harmful changes to federal worker pay, benefits, unions, and
protections
<https://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2025/06/senate-strips-most-retirement-cuts-reconciliation-anti-civil-service-provisions-remain/406070/>
against
unjust treatment
- Slashes to funding for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
by nearly 70%
<https://prospect.org/economy/2025-05-01-house-republicans-take-turn-ravaging-cfpb/>
- Elimination of a tax on gun silencer sales
<https://www.politico.com/news/2025/05/15/got-a-gun-silencer-you-might-get-a-tax-break-00352716>
- Raising the debt limit by $5 trillion <https://archive.is/exVor> purely
to fund tax cuts for the wealthy, adding trillions to the national debt.
Senate Republicans are aiming to pass their version of H.R. 1 by the July
4th holiday. Call your Senators and demand they oppose this destructive
bill.
