*Dear Members of Lake Country Unitarian Universalist Church,*
It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of my decision to step
down as President of the Board of Trustees and end my membership with
LCUUC, effective immediately.
Over the past years, I have dedicated myself to serving this congregation
with the hope of fostering growth, collaboration, accountability, and
professionalism among our members and leadership. However, recent events
have underscored deep-seated challenges within our community that have made
it clear this environment is no longer healthy or constructive.
I have witnessed a pattern of unprofessional and inappropriate behavior
from both of our ministers, repeated breaches of trust, and growing
hostility and resistance from long-standing members toward necessary
process and change. This toxicity has contributed to the loss of valuable
members and dedicated ministers in the past and continues to do harm to the
relationships and integrity of this congregation.
It is painful for me to acknowledge that, instead of upholding our shared
values of respect, compassion, and inclusion, this congregation has allowed
a handful of toxic dynamics to take root. My personal values and
professional integrity compel me to step away.
I must also express my belief that this congregation is heading down a bad
path that will not end well if the current culture is not confronted and
addressed. Without meaningful reflection and accountability, these toxic
patterns will only deepen, and the harm to individuals and the organization
will grow.
I urge you, as a congregation, to take this moment as an opportunity for
self-reflection. Consider the ways in which a lack of accountability and
unwillingness to confront toxicity have driven away good people—leaders,
ministers, and members alike. If LCUUC is to remain a community that
genuinely lives its values, a reckoning with these patterns is essential.
While my time with LCUUC has included many moments of inspiration and joy,
I can no longer stay in good conscience. I leave with hope that this
congregation will rise to the challenge of creating an environment where
all can feel truly respected and supported.
I wish you all the best as you move forward.
Sincerely,
Jon Hubbard
Former President, Board of Trustees
Lake Country Unitarian Universalist Church
