I am more than willing to help with Family Promise once I have recovered from my recent knee surgery. Went through the training. It's a snap.

And...for folks that are willing and able to contribute in this way, Family Promise offers a training for any volunteer willing to contribute in this more immersive and equitable form of volunteerism. It is a mandatory training, and I would suggest for the reason Paula lists a very good way to deepen ones contribution to this work.

Thanks Paula for your thoughts! So true. Had to share our experience last night:
Gina and I served dinner last night to a couple families. We sat down and chatted with the kids and moms as we ate. All were super sweet and communicative. Learned the favorite school subjects of each and even did a geography challenge game, not to mention the Lego buildings and a variety of children’s songs (way to go Gina!). The family of mom and 4 children were super excited because it was their last day- they are leaving today for an apartment in Milwaukee. Such awesome families- It was quite the special evening! I realize the new model will make such evenings more rare this winter, but i’m encouraged anyway.

I am glad we can continue to help out in some way - we do not want people to be hungry. Of course I will continue to help. And BIG thanks again to you, Gina. You are our guided force.
Perhaps in the future we can find some ways to have a more personal connection with people. People in need do not like to be perceived as Needy. They want to feel NEEDED and valued as individuals. There is the hunger for genuine human connection to consider. If we are only distributing food we are perceived as the food controllers - we're on the other side of the table (a barrier). That's the research in a nutshell on this topic.

Hello All,

Thank you for your input on our potential participation in the newly proposed Family Promise model. After considering all of the responses and having a conversation with Rev. Matt, it has been decided that we will participate in the program. At least we will give it the old college try! If need be, we can always opt out or better, we can partner with another church to share the load if it proves to be too much.

The current plan is that the EOS will open on November 13 and if we stay with the third Thursday of the month, we will "host" on the 16th. I have asked if we could switch to a Monday or Tuesday so that the idea of our volunteers making a meal to share together after church on Sunday might work. Stay tuned on that topic.

Good News: Meal categories will be assigned by Family Promise which will make our role easier. I will create a monthly SignUp Genius that will break the meal down into manageable parts so that all who wish to participate will have an option. For those who expressed the desire to donate money, this is also very much appreciated. We will sort out the details with the Finance Committee and see if we can make that happen. We will let you know asap.

More good news.....one of the four families currently in the shelter, mom with 3 children, has signed a lease and will be moving out!! The program is working. This leaves 3 families in the shelter, 3 moms and 6 children.

Thanks to All, and as always, please feel free to call or text me with questions or concerns.....I am not always speedy with emails, but I get there eventually! :/
