Hello Lekooks,
You may already be aware that the Arrowhead school board is planning to
vote on Policy 335
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/18EBj5Mpcl3TVZ91td4yZnC-NvfGJaqrs/view> *on
Wednesday, July 12*. There are 2 meetings
<https://www.arrowheadschools.org/about/MeetingSchedule.cfm> that day that
I invite you to attend to show your opposition to this policy:
6:30 PM - Community Conversation with the School Board
7:00 PM - Regular School Board Meeting
*What is Policy 335?*
Policy 335 will ban "safe space" signage. within the school premises It
will also ban "flags, signage, stickers or similar items for display
denoting a division of race, ideology, sexual orientation, gender
preference, or political affiliations." The intent is specifically to
target such things as Black Lives Matter and anything supporting the LGBTQ
community (including rainbows). Note they've added at the end: "This policy
does not include or encompass any student attire or any student owned items
or vehicles (as long as clothing is not in conflict with the AHS dress
code)." I assume this means it targets teacher signage or anything students
might choose to post (not on themselves) within the school grounds for
school groups (LGBTQ, political groups, etc.), during events, etc. Read the
draft Policy 335 here
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/18EBj5Mpcl3TVZ91td4yZnC-NvfGJaqrs/view>.
*Why do I oppose this?*
1. There is absolutely no need or reason to ban them.
2. Claiming that an entire school "should be a safe place" is denying
reality. We all know what "should be" is not what "is".
3. School groups have the right to exist on campus and advertise as such.
This includes political groups, LGBTQ, BLM, et al.
4. Divisiveness does not come from these symbols. It comes from banning
these symbols which represent acceptance, support, and empowerment for
marginalized students.
I welcome your thoughts. Please consider attending.
Thank you!
