Dear Gerald,

 

What is the truth about Wisconsin's prison population?

 

Wisconsin could safely reduce its prison population by half, making it possible to reinvest hundreds of millions of dollars in programs that would build stronger, safer, healthier communities. Nearly 20% of the current prison population is there for a crimeless revocation. That is, they have been incarcerated for a “technical violation” of supervision, not because they have been convicted a crime. Another 15% are eligible for the earned release program but have not participated because there is not enough capacity in the program. By maximizing the Treatment Alternatives and Diversions (TAD) program, thousands could be diverted to treatment programs rather than prison.

 

Some politicians and their wealthy friends have mischaracterized the goal of reducing the prison population. They need to know that Wisconsin will not stand for such a distortion of the truth.

 

Tell your elected officials that you support safe, common-sense measures to reduce the prison population of Wisconsin. Tell them that we need to re-direct the resources we save to programs that invest in the future of our people, our families, and our communities.
