Dear Interfaith Friends and Family,
Every year, the president of the United States signs a presidential proclamation declaring May as Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM). JAHM celebrates the contributions American Jews have made to all facets of American society. From the arrival of Jewish refugees in New Amsterdam (now New York) from Brazil in 1654, to the 33 Jewish members of the 117th in Congress in 2021, American Jewish history is filled with stories of immigration, innovation, triumph, and challenge. Using our curated resource collection explore the complexity of American Jewry and discuss what makes American Judaism vibrant, unique, and inspiring. In May 2021, nearly 100 organizations around the U.S. will come together to help Americans of all backgrounds discover, explore, and celebrate the vibrant and varied American Jewish experience from the dawn of our nation to the present day.

On April 28th, 2021, Governor Tony Evers signed a bipartisan bill into law requiring Wisconsin schools to provide education about the Holocaust and other genocides at least once in grades 5-8 and at least once again in grades 9-12. The requirement applies to public schools, charter schools and private schools that accept state-funded vouchers. It also requires the state superintendent to develop model curricula on the subject by consulting with a Wisconsin-based organization that provides Holocaust education, along with an agency in another state that has already developed model curricula. At least a dozen other states already require Holocaust education.

Milwaukee’s Jewish Community Relations Council reported that anti-Semitic incidents have more than doubled in the last two years. In the early 2010s, it was rare for the council to see more than 20 reports per year, but in 2020, it verified 99 incidents. While this genocide is the only one specifically named in the bill, Moshe Katz, Jewish Federation board chair, said the curriculum could open the door to discussing other examples of genocide and oppression. "It's not a Jewish bill," he said. "It's a bill about changing our behavior forever more on all forms of racism, anti-Semitism, chauvinism, misogyny, whatever the different areas are."

Congratulations to the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, the Jewish Community Relations Council - Milwaukee, the Nathan & Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, Jewish Museum Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Jewish Conference and the entire community at large.
A WARM WELCOME TO KAI YAEL GARDNER-MISHLOVE

The Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee welcomes Kai Yael Gardner-Mishlove to its Executive Committee. Each faith member of the Interfaith Conference appoints representatives to attend monthly IFCGM cabinet meetings. The 50+ members of the Conference cabinet guide the ongoing mission of the organization. It's an impressive assembly of healers, helpers and teachers. As new members take their seats at the Interfaith table, it will become our routine to introduce them to you.
On April 15, 2021, Kai Yael Gardner-Mishlove also began a new role as director at the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. Kai brings to the JCRC a long professional history with leadership roles advocating for various marginalized and vulnerable communities, such as program coordinator of refugee health and social services at Advocate Aurora, family engagement director for Edot Midwest Regional Jewish Diversity and Racial Justice Collaborative, parent guide for deaf and hard of hearing families for State of Wisconsin and co-facilitator with Nurturing Diversity Partners. As an active Jewish community volunteer, she has served on the boards of Hillel Milwaukee, JCRC Milwaukee, the Friendship Circle WI, National Council of Jewish Women-Milwaukee, SEA Literacy Project, Hands and Voices and various disability rights groups.
"Tables Across Borders" was a collaboration with Kai and the owners of local restaurants Amilinda, the Tandem and Tricklebee Café, producing a series of pop-up dinners for refugee chefs to make special meals from Ethiopia, Syria, Serbia, Rohingya and the Congo. She also helped create, “Unity Brunch,” a networking event linking local communities and activists across missions and cultures.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston University, with graduate studies in public health from the University of Illinois, and is a graduate of the Selah Jews of Color Leadership Program of Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice, and of the Jewish Women of Color Resilience Circle. In 2017, she was awarded the Building Bridges award by National Council of Jewish Women Milwaukee, and was recognized as one of 12 Milwaukee “Sheros” in 2020 by the Milwaukee Repertory Theater.
It is our good fortune to welcome Kai Yael Gardner-Mishlove to the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee.
