Black Lives Matter - Learn & Take Action for September 2020 #2

LEARN – You’ve heard about Kyle Rittenhouse’s mother being given a standing ovation at the Republican Women’s dinner in Pewaukee on September 24. It’s made international news. I’m sure you are disgusted and offended and can’t really believe it. This is not political, it is blatantly racist. He went to Kenosha to hurt those standing up for Black Lives to Matter after the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man now paralyzed from the waist down.

Now think about if Kyle Rittenhouse was a Black boy. Can you imagine that? No, because he would be dead.

TAKE ACTION – As illustrated above, imagine a Black person in a situation rather than a white person. Think of situations where you tell stories, and think how the story would change if you were Black.

George Floyd and I were both arrested for allegedly spending a counterfeit $20 bill. For George Floyd, a man my age, with two kids, it was a death sentence. For me, it is a story I sometimes tell at parties. That, my friends, is White privilege.

Use a capital “B” when writing about Black people.

The Associated Press changed its writing style guide Friday (June 19, 2020) to capitalize the “b” in the term Black when referring to people in a racial, ethnic or cultural context, weighing in on a hotly debated issue. The change conveys “an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among people who identify as Black, including those in the African diaspora and within Africa,” John Daniszewski, AP’s vice president of standards, said in a blog post Friday. “The lowercase black is a color, not a person.”
