I hope you all had a safe and restful weekend. I am writing you today because I have a favor to ask. As COVID-19 case totals, hospitalizations, and deaths continue to mount right here in Wisconsin, there is increasing demand for a statewide mask requirement. First, a little background about why its so needed.

 
Why Masks?

World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines have stated since June 6th that members of the general public should wear cloth masks in public places where physical distancing is difficult or impossible.
On July 14th, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published Centers for Disease Control (CDC) findings, which affirm that “cloth face coverings are a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19 that could reduce the spread of the disease, particularly when used universally within communities. There is increasing evidence that cloth face coverings help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others.”
As of July 23rd, 30 states already have mask orders in place.
Why a Statewide Mandate?

Numerous Wisconsin communities and businesses like Wal-Mart and Menard’s have already instituted mask orders. Unfortunately, the inconsistent rules have created confusion and made compliance and contact tracing extremely difficult. A statewide mandate eliminates this confusion
In the absence of a statewide mandate, cases and hospitalizations have been steadily increasing for weeks. As of 7/26/2020, Our average daily cases was 930 per day, 194 patients were currently hospitalized, and 892 Wisconsinites had died (46 deaths in just the prior 7 days)
A statewide mandate eliminates any competitive disadvantage for businesses who choose to implement a mandate while peer businesses do not, in areas where large numbers of residents prefer not to wear masks.
This is not a matter of political preference. This is about saving lives. If we want schools to open for in-person instruction this fall, a mask mandate is the least we can do.
