The WISDOM “Prison Prevention Workgroup” 
 has requested that we all call our state legislators on Monday, May 20.Please contact your State Senator and State Assembly representative and ask them to prioritize a $15 million per year increase in TAD as they work on the new budget. To find your Representative and Senator and their contact information, click HERE and type in your address under “Who Are My Legislators?”
Ask your representatives to work to ensure that the new state budget includes a $15 million annual increase for Treatment Alternatives and Diversions (TAD). TAD allows counties to create or expand programs that are alternatives to jail or prison for people who the judge and prosecutor agree would be most appropriately sent to a treatment program to deal with their mental health and/or addiction issues. TAD programs have been studied and proven extremely effective, saving taxpayers more than $2 for every $1 they spend – AND they are more effective in deterring future crime.
Remind your representatives that Wisconsin’s prisons are dangerously overcrowded and understaffed. To avoid a major crisis, we need to be smarter. We need to be sure that people who are ill and/or elderly can be released; we need Parole for the long-term people who have done the time the judge expected them to serve; we need to stop sending people back to prison for Crimeless Revocations, AND we need to increase TAD so that judges have a better option for people who need a mental health or addiction treatment.

It is important to contact your representative, no matter which political party they belong to.  As negotiations continue, we need the Legislature and Governor to see this as an urgent priority.
