TheLCUUC Ministry for Earth in cooperation with the Waukesha County EnvironmentalAction League (WEAL), will be offering a program on WEAL’s “Zero WasteWaukesha” initiative at Lake Country UU Church, Hartland, on Saturday February2 at 7 pm. The program will include a video “Racing to Zero” documenting San Francisco’s program to eliminateall waste sent to the landfill by 2020 by treating garbage as a RESOURCE ratherthan just something to get rid of. Many communities across the US havecommitting to work on the Zero Waste initiative. The video will be followed bya discussion led by WEAL members Laurie Longtine and Charlene LeMoine.

Laurieand Charlene will also be sharing details of the global “Skip the Straw” movement during the discussion following thevideo. Plastic straws may seem harmless but can contribute to the more than 150metric tons of plastics in the world’s oceans. They do not biodegrade butphotodegrade into microplastics, which can be ingested by fish, birds and otherwildlife and ultimately enter our food chain. Plastic straw bans are beingenacted around the globe, including a number of cities in the United States. The state of California recently enacted legislation requiring dine-inrestaurants to only give straws when requested, and statewide bans are beingconsidered in Hawaii, New Jersey, and New York. Pleasejoin us to discuss how Waukesha County can work toward sustainability.

Refreshments will be served inrecyclable or washable containers and utensils, and NO STRAWS will be provided.
