Hello Everyone,
LCUUC, in cooperation with UWM-W, is excited to be hosting a free screening of the award-winning film, Blood is at the Doorstep.
The film tells the story of Dontre Hamilton, an unarmed black man, who was killed by police in Milwaukee. The film follows his family as they embark on a quest for answers, justice, and reform. The event will be held at UWM-W on March 14, 2019 at 7 pm.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with family members, Nate and Maria Hamilton, mental health advocate, Brenda Wesley, and UWM-W professor, Tim Thering. Over 130 people attended a similar event hosted by the Waukesha Public Library in January, so organizers believe there is widespread interest in the film and the issues it addresses. “It is our hope that learning Dontre’s story and listening to his mother and brother will build understanding and compassion for what may simply be a headline to some people,” said Kerry Duma, co-chair of the LCUUC Social Justice Committee.
The event is being co-sponsored by the university’s Campus Climate Committee whose mission is to develop “educational programs to improve campus climate, especially in regards to acceptance of diversity.”  Funding for the project is provided in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council. The event is free and open to all.
Please join us for the event and help to spread the word so that we have a good turn out. If you'd like additional materials (to be used as posters for example) please contact Kerry Duma, Kim Suhr, or me.
Thanks,
Joanne
