Dear Friends,
Decades ago, when Lorie Otto was still alive, I was a Wild One's member. I recently found this local chapter, thanks Kerry Duma, and encourage you to come to the February meeting if you are interested in landscaping with native plants, attracting pollinators and helping wildlife.

February 2019 Meeting

Join Us Saturday, February 16 at 10 AM

Going Batty for Bats!

Christa Trushinsky, Naturalist
Riverbend Nature Center, Racine

Planting native species in your garden is a great way to attract the bugs that bats dine on every night! Join us as we explore the many variety of plants that you can use to support bat populations in your area. We will also discuss why bats are important, why there seem to be fewer of them flying around, and other steps you can take to support bats in your own backyard.

This indoor program will be given at the South Kettle Moraine State Forest Headquarters, Eagle: S91 W39091 Highway 59<https://eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwixsite.us13.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D36510efa11f023df48604470c%26id%3Da7503124ad%26e%3D622590d140&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc92bc75690af4eeb3c4908d689467804%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636847333087777713&sdata=ZOYAzgTaYNX%2FAFZAaa239E9I9lNA9i3LXO6VclbNJOE%3D&reserved=0> (one mile west of Eagle).

Members and guests are welcome to join us for lunch after the meeting (see below for more details).

Lunch After Meeting

We've introduced a new addition to our meetings. In order for members to get to know each other better, we would like to invite those interested to join us at a local restaurant for lunch after meetings. After our January meeting, participants enjoyed a delicious lunch at the 1863 Coffee Saloon & Cafe in Eagle. If you would like to join us for lunch after the February meeting, a sign-up sheet will be provided at the meeting so that we can give the restaurant a heads-up to prepare.

Chapter's Annual Native Plant Sale Deadline
February 26

Our chapter's annual native plant sale is on! There is still time to dream a garden and order plants. Order forms and instructions have been emailed to members.

Reminders: full trays--32 plants--must be ordered. Share/split a tray with a friend? Or submit a partial tray wish list to weedmantandj at aol.com<mailto:weedmantandj at aol.com>. Jean will work to join partial tray desires--8,16, 24--into a full tray order. Final orders are due February 26. (Partial tray wish lists should be sent to Jean well before then.)

Our February meeting will be a good time to chat about plants/orders. Plants will be available in May.

National Invasive Species Awareness Week

National Invasive Species Awareness Week (NISAW) is scheduled for February 25 – March 1, 2019, and according to experts with the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA), it's a topic that deserves everyone’s attention. Non-native plants, animals and pathogens can harm humans and the environment and impact our nation's economy. The damage done by invasive plants alone costs the US an estimated $34.7 billion a year.

The NISAW provides the following ways that you can help to raise awareness:

  1. Learn about invasive species, especially those found in your region. Your county extension office<https://eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwixsite.us13.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D36510efa11f023df48604470c%26id%3Dd927e24956%26e%3D622590d140&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc92bc75690af4eeb3c4908d689467804%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636847333087787721&sdata=TBXMfaCwYMrjbcWUgwdvYsNtwijhiHGhnia0gLDrnPk%3D&reserved=0> and the National Invasive Species Information Center<https://eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwixsite.us13.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D36510efa11f023df48604470c%26id%3D4b1d25d063%26e%3D622590d140&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc92bc75690af4eeb3c4908d689467804%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636847333087797730&sdata=VVHI%2FNusNTzC3ZWPouu1IRZ%2BoJyuo7rEjIGDR336vmY%3D&reserved=0> are both trusted resources.
  2. Clean hiking boots, waders, boats and trailers, off-road vehicles and other gear to stop invasive species from hitching a ride to a new location. 6. Plant only non-invasive plants in your garden, and remove any known invaders.
  7. Report new or expanded invasive species outbreaks to authorities. Here is a state-by-state list of contacts<https://eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwixsite.us13.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D36510efa11f023df48604470c%26id%3Dc591cb77ab%26e%3D622590d140&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc92bc75690af4eeb3c4908d689467804%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636847333087827755&sdata=QzID0LYmR8JNAh1ddi5xp56Xg0A51rh8hIpi2teX4dQ%3D&reserved=0>.
  8. Volunteer to help remove invasive species from public lands and natural areas.
  9. Ask your political representatives at the state, local and national level to support invasive species control efforts.

Though the impact of invasive species is profound, there are important steps we can take to manage infestations and prevent their spread. It all begins with awareness. To learn more about how you can participate, visit: NISAW<https://eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwixsite.us13.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D36510efa11f023df48604470c%26id%3D36aca4b714%26e%3D622590d140&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc92bc75690af4eeb3c4908d689467804%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636847333087827755&sdata=ZPl2k6KUtI5tc5cCDFDbf4QkARNe%2F5YUWqKONU%2Bk8Sg%3D&reserved=0>.

Volunteer Opportunities

Chapter Volunteers Needed

Chapter Outreach

In order to to expand our Wild Ones Kettle Moraine Chapter outreach, a coordinator and participants are needed to organize our chapter’s participation in local fairs, Earth Day events, Waukesha Green Team events, home Improvement expos, farm markets and parades. Our chapter has participated in a few of these events previously, but hope to increase our educational outreach and grow our membership at such events. We already have a display which can be used at such events. If interested, please email us at KMWildOnes at gmail.com<mailto:KMWildOnes at gmail.com>.

Program Reporting

Reporters are needed to write a short description/summary of each meeting to be published in the following month’s newsletter. This would be a service to members who were unable to come to the meeting. It could also encourage members to come to more meetings so they can enjoy the presentation/tours in the future. If interested, please email us at KMWildOnes at gmail.com<mailto:>.

Workday - Bluff Creek State Natural Area (SNA)

When: Saturday, February 9, 9:00 AM - Noon
Where: Bluff Creek SNA<https://eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwixsite.us13.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D36510efa11f023df48604470c%26id%3D72bf98de21%26e%3D622590d140&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc92bc75690af4eeb3c4908d689467804%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636847333087847772&sdata=7cx1jnQ%2B8yak1qM9WiaGLXkpy2U7gkC5bAS1fL6sKPg%3D&reserved=0>

Get outside and cut up buckthorn at Bluff Creek SNA. Come enjoy the winter fire if there is snow and help volunteers during our monthly Southern Kettle Moraine SNA workdays on the second Saturday. Enjoy a short hike, then help cut and pile brush, learn something, meet knowledgeable people, and enjoy the beauty of this fen area in the process. We will remove buckthorn that can spread and shade out rare fen and savanna plants at this site. No skills needed you will be trained onsite.

Directions: Bluff Creek parking lot. From Whitewater take Co Hwy P south past Hwy 12 about 2 miles and park on the parking lot on the west side of the road before Bluff Creek or across the road in the fisheries parking lot.

Dress for the weather and the outdoors. We strongly encourage boots/sturdy shoes and clothes that can get wear and tear. Natural fabrics are best, fires may create small holes in clothes. Bring gloves, safety glasses (we will have extra).

Please RSVP to Ginny Coburn at virginiacoburn at coburn.com<mailto:virginiacoburn at coburn.com> or 262-441-0393 if interested so we know who to expect. But if you don’t get around to notifying, show up anyway. Call Ginny if you need direction help. If the workday is cancelled due to weather conditions, a message will be left at 262-441-0393 at least two hours prior to the event. If there is no cancellation message, the workday will continue as scheduled.
