Next week will be Earth Week throughout the world. Observed every year on April 22, Earth Day is a day to celebrate the planet and educate people about the need for environmental protection. It was introduced by our own Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, and marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement.

One of the ways organizations such as the Sierra Club recommend to celebrate this event is to go outdoors and participate in trash cleanups. We at LCUUC will be doing our annual spring Adopt A Highway cleanup on Saturday April 27. You are all welcome to participate in this.  If you have never done this, please give it a try!

LCUUC has participated in Waukesha County's "Adopt A Highway" program for almost the entire Century (since 2004). This program relies on organizations such as ours to pick up trash along their assigned County Highways to make our roadways more attractive; and the organizations get publicity in the form of signs along the designated stretch of highway. Each participating organization commits to 3 cleanups per year. Our stretch of road is Highway E, from the intersection with K (northwest corner of LCUUC property) north to highway EF.

Wear good walking shoes and gloves. We supply the bags, orange vests, and water. Meet at the front door at 10. Takes about 1-1/2 hours total, and is a nice sociable walk in addition to doing something to help our environment and publicize our church.

We especially welcome Youth participation, although anybody is welcome. Per Waukesha County rules, children participating must be at least 11 years old or in 6th grade.
