AWARD RECIPIENTS

 Frank Zeidler Award
Rev. Tonen O’Connor, Resident Priest Emerita, Milwaukee Zen Center
For exceptional service to society through longtime direct work with those incarcerated within the state prison system across Wisconsin, decades of active participation and leadership with the Interfaith Conference’s Committee for Interfaith Understanding, and advancement of interreligious knowledge, tolerance, and friendship through extensive public speaking. She also currently coordinates the Milwaukee Zen Center’s prison program, serves on the Solitary Confinement Workgroup of WISDOM and on the Mpact Council of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and tutors people new to this country in the English Language Learning program at Literacy Services of Wisconsin.

Rev. Herbert Huebschmann Urban Ministry Award
 Milwaukee Transitional Jobs Collaborative
For providing pathways to self-reliance and dignity for thousands of people in Milwaukee and across Wisconsin who face impediments to employment, including many with prison records, by advocating for publicly subsidized transitional jobs that lead to non-subsidized employment. The Collaborative hosts jobs fairs, lobbies public officials, and serves as an information clearing house. It is comprised of faith-based and community organizations, other nonprofits, government agencies, and businesses.

 Mark Rohlfing Memorial Award
Renee Elias, Executive Director & Co-founder, Rides and Reins, Slinger, WI
For providing physical, cognitive, and emotional benefits to individuals with special needs through therapeutic, horse-assisted activities. Founded by Renee and her late husband, Don, 19 years ago, this nonprofit organization helps build children’s self-confidence and boosts concentration. Because horseback riding gently moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to the way a person walks, riders with physical disabilities often show improvements in flexibility, balance, and strength.
