Hi Bev,
Have you thought of using an overhead lead line instead? When I had an
escaper and before I installed my fence I ran a cable from my house to a
tree at the far end of the yard, about 60yds. Then attached a pulley to one
end and a clip to the other of a smaller gauge cable to make the runner.
You can install a stop on the overhead cable so they can't get any closer
to the end of the yard than you want.
I can explain my setup more if you want to call. It gave my Red Bone
Coonhound natural-born-murderer an area about 30 yds by 50 yds, a pretty
big area (not just rabbits, skunks & ground squirrels, she tangled with and
sometimes killed groundhogs & adult raccoons, I got to get rabies shots
because I got bite once separating her from a coon, she didn't have a
mark).
The materials aren't that expensive and you could do without any fence. I
bought the parts and assembled it myself. There was no way one of the ones
they sell at the pet stores was going to be strong enough (or as long as I
wanted). The cable that ran from the house to the end of yard was heavy to
put up, you need someone strong to help. Then use one of these (the right
size for the cable diameter being used) at either end and you can tighten
it once or twice a year as they stretch the cable. That way it won't sag
too quickly and you don't have to reconnect it for many years.
You just have to be sure the dog can't get out of their collar. It took my
dog about a month to give up on running lunges to get free. Then she
chilled and it worked like a charm.
