Hi,

I thought I’d share two resources on the Civil Rights Movement for reflecting, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on how far we’ve come and how far we have to go, if you’re so inclined.

The first is the Civil Rights Trail website. You can find information about significant events through their interactive map, a timeline, a gallery and more. The map seems to link to the least amount of info. I found the gallery a good way to find events/locations I wanted to learn more about.

The second resource is an archive of Freedom Summer material maintained by Miami University where the training was done. I lived in Peabody Hall my sophomore year of college.

On this introductory page you can select Browse Text and Photo Collection, Browse Video and Audio Collection or Curriculum Guides.

I found this log of events both heartbreaking and inspiring. These are the entries concerning the murder of Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner and James Chaney. Bud, remember during our Anti-Racist class today when I said we have to be willing to take a hit (because they continue to be victimized)? These men made the ultimate sacrifice.

You can also see on this page that Pete Seeger was indeed in the thick of it.
“Appendix, Mississippi Summer Project running summary of incidents, n.d.”

I’m wondering how I had the good fortune to be born in America, white, healthy, to a middle class family and lived (so far) not during a major war. I feel both grateful and guilty. We learned in class that bad guilt immobilizes you but that good guilt spurs you to action. I want to take action. I wish there weren’t so many arenas right now were action is needed.

Liz

ps Suddenly this seems familiar to me, if I’ve sent this info before I apologize.
