LCUUC Solar Entering 8th Year of Operation
LCUUC demonstrated our commitment to clean renewable energy by contracting with Renewable Energy Solutions (now SunVest Solar) for a 19.68 kilowatt solar photoelectric system on church property. This was a project by LCUUC’s Green Sanctuary (now the Earth Ministry) Committee, where we contacted RES for a proposal for a solar electric system for our church in August 2010. Their proposal was especially attractive because it required no cash outlay from us, but instead paid for the system by a combination of incentives and electricity sales revenues from WE Energies. The system purchase was approved by a special Congregational meeting in October. Then RES made an offer in late 2010 to sell the system outright to us for $12,000 cash, which was raised by a special donation appeal in December. The system was installed in 2011 and commissioned on August 4 of that year.
The system now entering the 8th year of operation. The results are:
• More than 160, 000 kilowatt-hours of electricity generated, which avoided over 255,000 pounds of carbon dioxide being produced from fossil fuels by WE Energies.
• More than $20,000 in revenue for LCUUC from sale of electricity to WE Energies, with approximately $3,000 continuing revenue each year.
• And maybe most importantly, has served as a highly visible calling card for our church, demonstrating our commitment to a clean environment.
