I thought enough of us would be interested in the new Gmail features that
it was worth bothering all of us. The full story can be accessed three
or four stories down.

Take a peek at your Gmail settings—notice some new options? Starting today,
you'll be able to "snooze" emails to make sure you don't forget about that
important email you opened on your phone, "nudge" yourself to reply to
long-neglected messages, and use Gmail's AI-powered "smart replies,"
currently only available on mobile, on your web browser. And over the next
few weeks, Google will start letting users set emails to "self-destruct"
after a certain amount of time, prevent recipients from forwarding or
downloading a message, and require recipients to enter a code before
opening an email. Many of the new tools already exist in a hodgepodge of of
plugins, but by bringing them to main Gmail app, Klint Finley
<http://links.newsletters.wired.com/ctt?kn=27&ms=MTMzODY5NjYS1&r=MjM5NjgxNjAwMTc5S0&b=0&j=MTM4MjIzMzY4NgS2&mt=1&rt=0>
writes, Google is delivering some much-needed task management and security
features to its massive user base.

This is the first major update to Gmail in years
<http://links.newsletters.wired.com/ctt?kn=1&ms=MTMzODY5NjYS1&r=MjM5NjgxNjAwMTc5S0&b=0&j=MTM4MjIzMzY4NgS2&mt=1&rt=0>,
and it's long overdue. Gmail revolutionized email when it launched in 2004,
but it has introduced few changes in its 14-year existence. So why now? As
Finley reports, Gmail is facing mounting competition from technologies like
Slack, text messaging, and video chat, and it's in Google's best interest
to start helping users feel more productive and secure while using its
service. "In 2020 I don't want to be saying 'I use Gmail plus Slack plus
Evernote plus Zoom,'" says Alan Lepofsky, an analyst at the digital
strategy firm Constellation Research. "The user experience needs to become
easier."

Also: A new encryption method

on the market, and a major upgrade
