Dear Friends,
Big box stores across the state pay extremely low property taxes because they are allowed to be assessed based on comparisons to closed big box stores and even vacant property. This puts an extra burden on home owners and small businesses. Big Box stores utilize far more of a municipality's resources yet pay far lower property taxes. I urge you to write to your Wisconsin State senator and representative regarding this issue. Below is the letter I just sent off.
Dear Sen. Kapenga and Rep. Duchow,
Please follow the lead of the Indiana state legislature and pass legislation in Wisconsin closing off tax strategies that allow big box stores to pay very low property taxes which shifts the tax burden to home owners and small businesses that own their property. Pass legislation prohibiting assessors from valuing thriving big box stores the same as abandoned buildings in a different market segment. This should be a bipartisan issue. I look forward to hearing your stand on the Dark Store loophole in Wisconsin.
Sincerely,
Fran Bills
