A number of events are planned/still emerging to honor the 50th Anniversary of 200 Nights of Marching for Fair Housing led by Father James Groppi. See the calendar at “200nightsoffreedom.org<http://200nightsoffreedom.org/>” for details. Several are listed below.

(A) Open Housing: The Suburban Challenge Then, and Now: Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 - 8:30 pm at UU Church West in Brookfield.

On 9/20/1967, Unitarian Church West became the single suburban congregation to open its doors for the NAACP Youth Commandos and Father James Groppi during Milwaukee’s Open Housing Marches. More than 500 people packed the building to listen and learn. At this event, we take ownership of this history of racism and response, learn about today’s needs, offer support to young black leaders, and rededicate ourselves to the racial justice challenges of our time.

The program will be preceded by a Public Witness for racial justice and open housing along North Ave in front of the church beginning at 6:30 pm. Admission is free; a freewill offering is requested for the YWCA Social Justice Leadership Camp for Girls and ACLU youth leadership program.

We hope to car-pool with interested LCUUC members meeting at Naga-Waukee Park & Ride (contact Phil Smith - psmithw318 at gmail.com<mailto:psmithw318 at gmail.com>) and LCUUC parking lot (contact Sara/Bud hudson -sbhudson at hotmail.com<mailto:sbhudson at hotmail.com>). This event is sponsored by Black Lives Matter to Wisconsin UUs (BLM2WIUUs).

(B) Another event, the Milwaukee Film Festival, will be presenting a BLM2WUU-sponsored film “Black Lens Shorts: Family Matters” shown on Thursday October 12, 4:30 pm at the Oriental Theater. Also “The Blood is at the Doorstep” a documentary about the Dontre Hamilton killing and the Hamilton family’s response is playing three times. Car-pooling can be organized, also.
