The unmowed areas northwest of the firepit area, east of the Garden for Good, and north of the spruce tree grove were sprayed today to try to get rid of the Canada thistles that have taken over those areas. PLEASE AVOID THESE AREAS FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS (probably best to avoid them anyway because of the thistles, and because the guy who sprayed today encountered a couple of nests of yellow jackets, who chased him away - he's lucky he didn't get stung).
The Canada thistle problem has been with us for several years, and is getting worse. We have been mowing them a couple times a summer, but they continue to spread by underground rhizomes. I consulted with Mike Fort and with Sarah and George Ehrhardt (they are new members, Sarah is a landscape architect), and the all recommended spraying with a herbicide called "Milestone". That was done today by Seasonal Services (Sarah's employer), who gave us a favorable rate.
Thanks for your understanding, I don't like chemicals either but those areas of our property have become unusable.
