Remember the Congregation of LCUUC voted at a congregational meeting in 2014 to approve a resolution that LCUUC will not make any investments in fossil fuel companies, as part of the Move to Divest movement promoted by 350.org.

Congratulations to us LCUUCers for being near the forefront of this movement to combat global warming.

Subject: Huge win in divestment

Friends,

We did it - the dam has broken. After more than five years of inspiring and creative campaigning from the climate movement, the New York City and State pensions are moving forward to freeze new investments in fossil fuels and divest.

This victory is huge. Combined, the city and state pension funds are worth a whopping $390 billion, making this the largest coal, oil and gas divestment in THE WORLD.

This is a major win for New Yorkers, but it is also an undeniable victory for all of us. We’ve been stigmatizing the fossil fuel industry through divestment for years and fighting for our communities -- and we are winning.

Let’s take a moment to thank Governor Cuomo and Comptroller Stringer -- this helps support their decision to divest, and will hold them accountable to make this commitment a reality.

People power made this happen. From your emails and social media shares, to the creative protests and letter-writing campaigns we helped organize, to huge rallies like the most recent Sandy 5 march, and public hearings by city leaders like NYC Public Advocate Tish James, we pushed and pushed and didn’t give up, even in the face of intractable targets.

We couldn’t be ignored. Under pressure from the combined force of your collective voices, these elected officials acted.

But it’s even more significant because it comes from the heart of the world’s financial center. This decision sends a loud message to Trump and his fossil fuel billionaires: the end of the fossil fuel era is here. And it says to the world that investments in coal, oil and gas don’t make moral or financial sense.

Take a minute to add your name to a thank you letter to NY Governor Cuomo and Comptroller Stringer for listening to the people and taking bold climate action -- and let's push them to follow through on their divestment announcement.

Today, we take a moment to celebrate. And tomorrow, we get back to work. We’ll keep the pressure on our elected officials at all levels of government, and fight for our climate and communities.

With deep gratitude,

Betatámia, on behalf of the #DivestNY coalition

P.S. This victory is also a signal to every other governor, mayor, treasurer, comptroller and beyond that the time to act to is now. We need you to send that signal over and over to your local and state officials. Together, we can start building a Fossil Free world.
