This is about the Transportation Equity project that our Green Sanctuary committee has taken on, as an "Environmental Justice" project necessary for LCUUC to be certified as a "Green Sanctuary" by the UUA - Ministry for Earth. See the article in the September newsletter "Green Sanctuary" section for more information on this project.
We learned about this project last winter from the Sierra Club newsletter, and got in on the "ground floor" organizing it last spring. We have participated in numerous conference calls and organizing sessions at LCUUC with members of the Sierra Club, SOPHIA, Common Ground, UU Church West, and Interfaith Senior Network. The next event will be the Waukesha County forum in Waukesha on September 14, which will be followed by a state-wide forum in Milwaukee later this year.
The Sierra Club is providing paid staff to facilitate this project, and needs funds to support their efforts. Please see the attached email from the Sierra Club below for more details, and please make a donation to them as you see fit to support this project.
Thank you,
Gerry Flakas
Green Sanctuary Committee member

Subject: It's time for a change
Dear Esther,
Jackie's car broke down, and she can no longer get to her job. Lester got a job in a nearby city, but there is no bus that will get him there. Christie's mother can no longer drive herself to her doctor's appointments. Peter wants to live in a community where he can get to work without driving.
We want Jackie and Lester to be able to get to work. We want Christie's mom to be able to go to doctor's appointments, take shopping trips, and meet with friends. We want Peter to choose to live in Wisconsin and keep our communities growing. Donate today and help us advocate for a statewide transportation system that is safe, efficient and affordable for everyone - drivers and non-drivers alike - in urban and rural areas.
Unfortunately, in many areas our transportation system doesn't provide options for those who cannot, choose not to, and can't afford to drive. At the same time, local roads and bridges are crumbling across Wisconsin, with potholes covering our streets. Yet we are pouring billions of dollars into expanding mega-highways.
It's time for a change. That's why the Sierra Club-John Muir Chapter has formed a robust campaign around responsible transportation and building healthy communities. With your support we can take our advocacy to the next level. The next state transportation budget debate will begin in a few months. This is our opportunity to curb the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions by investing in alternatives to driving.
Good transportation systems reduce energy consumption and improve air quality while providing good quality of life for all citizens. Please donate today and help the John Muir Chapter:
Create local coalitions throughout the state to support robust, fair transportation systems
Raise the issue of transportation equity in the discussion by releasing a Transportation and Equity report and helping to put on a large summit in the late Fall
Work with Democrats and Republicans to ensure we prioritize our transportation spending during the budget discussions next year, building on the leadership of the Senate Republicans last session
Help us create a Wisconsin that offers quality of life on all levels. Your gift today will support our work to ensure everyone has access to jobs, doctor's appointments, and other needs and services.
Sincerely,
Bill Davis
