The plant sale is coming up in a couple of weeks (May 20 - 21). We have
been advised by Catherine Marrari, who is a member of South East Wisconsin
Master Gardeners, about the threat of "jumping worms" (really), which have
been introduced from Southeast Asia. see the UW-Ext web page about the worms
at: https://fyi.uwex.edu/sewmg/files/2011/02/FD-Jumping-Worms-1.pdf.

As a precaution, we are advised that you should dig up the plants you wish
do donate a few days ahead of time, carefully wash off all of the soil (the
worm larvae and cocoons, which are very small, are the problem) and pot
them in commercial potting soil.

We know this is an inconvenience, but the threat from the spread of these
invasive worms is real, and we really should do what we can to prevent, or
at least retard, it.

Thanks,

Gerry & Esther Flakas

Subj: Jumping Worms - [SEW-MG] Pot A Thon Schedule for Week

Hi Esther,

I wanted to follow up with our conversation yesterday about Jumping Worms.
Below is an email regarding preparations that the Southeastern WI Master
Gardeners (SEW-MG) are making as they plan for their Plant Sale in May to
avoid inadvertently spreading jumping worms. I was also surprised to see
that the worms are now in Waukesha Co. too. Please see the UW-Ext webpage
about the worms at:
https://fyi.uwex.edu/sewmg/files/2011/02/FD-Jumping-Worms-1.pdf.
The DNR has listed them as a prohibited invasive species in WI. It's
unfortuate that we need to worry about this - but I felt it was important that
you (and the church) knew about this new species and it's yet unknown
threat/impact to our environment.

- Catherine Marrari

Here is the schedule of Pot A Thons for the coming week.
As always, help is always welcomed and needed. No sign up is required!
Just come when you can and leave when you need to.
Important reminder:
If you are bringing plants from your own garden, they must be bare root.
This is due to the possibility of jumping worms.
Explanation of jumping worms can be found on the Perennial Plant Sale
page.
