June 2016 Newsletter WE'VE BEEN BUSY! NEW STAFF, NEW PROGRAMS, AND MORE FAMILIES THAN WE CAN HANDLE!! It's been a while since we've put out a newsletter and I apologize for that. However, so much has been happening at Family Promise over the past several months that it's been hard to keep up! Moving forward, I promise to keep you better informed. Here's a few highlights of what's been happening:
(1) We've been shaking the bushes and building our family referral base and I'm pleased to announce that we have been operating at full capacity since early March. We even have had a waiting list for several months.
(2) We replaced our part-time Case Manager with a full-time Program Director to better serve our full house of guest families.
(3) We've initiated a number of new programs to better serve our guests, including a transportation program, a mentoring program, and a children's activity program.
(4) Our Board of Directors has been doing some strategic planning and has devised a new mission statement, vision statement and core values that define us as an organization. These tools serve as guideposts in both our day-to-day operations and our long-term initiatives. These are just a few of the things happening at Family Promise in recent months. Most importantly, a steady stream of families have been moving through our program on their way to self-sufficiency, thanks primarily to our fantastic army of volunteers from our host and support congregations.

Upon arriving in January, it became readily apparent to the new Executive Director that we needed to expand the part-time Case Manager position to a full-time Program Director position in order to recruit more guests and better serve our guests. Case Manager, Debbie Fisher, decided she wanted to concentrate on developing her private practice rather than expand to a full-time role. Therefore in May we sadly bid farewell to Debbie while saying hello to our new Program Director, Martha Terry! Martha Terry Martha served for eleven years at the Prader-Willi Homes in Oconomowoc where she worked in several management positions. She earned both her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and and her Masters Degree in Counseling from UW-Whitewater. She's married, a mother of three and lives in Waukesha. "Family Promise presents such a unique opportunity for helping families in need," says Martha. "I really enjoy working with these families and helping them improve their lives." Martha is working with David in developing more comprehensive programming for our guests that takes maximum advantage of each family's relatively short stay with us. This includes better connections to apartments, jobs, social services, schools and recreational activities while also better utilizing the vast resources offered by our volunteers. We're so glad to have Martha on board and we encourage all of you to reach out and say hello! A New Car for SteveSteve and his son, Justin, were living in a motel prior to coming to Family Promise about two months ago. Steve works construction but his car kept breaking down and just wasn't worth fixing. As part of our new TransportationDavid congratulates Steve (the thin one) on his new set of wheels!Program, we are actively seeking donated vehicles for guests like Steve who are have viable jobs and just need a decent car to keep them employed. A Family Promise supporter came through for Steve with a late model Honda Accord that still has some good engine life remaining. Now Steve is saving money for an apartment instead of wasting it on a vehicle that wasn't worth saving. Incidentally, last week Steve was offered a new job from another Family Promise supporter who runs a home rehab company. A new job and new car within a week - not bad, Steve!Let's Talk Mission and VisionFrom the Board Chair: As we move through our second year of operations and our focus shifts from start-up to long-term sustainability, the Board has re-worked the organization's mission statement, vision statement and core values: Mission Statement:
"Every family deserves a home."
Vision Statement: "Family Promise offers a collaborative community effort, linking resources, cost-effective accommodations, meals and support services to local families experiencing homelessness while assisting them to achieve and sustain independence." Core Values:We believe in the dignity of all persons and that they should be treated with equality, respect and compassion.
We believe in the potential for change and growth and that families with support and guidance, can determine their needs and future.
We strive to be wise and effective stewards of all of our resources including finances, time, people and property.
We believe in a holistic, creative and responsible approach as we co
llaborate with others to meet the needs of families
These are the principles upon which Family Promise will develop programming, work with our guests and volunteers and build for the future. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank all of you for your continued interest, work and support of Family Promise. The service we provide to our guests is incredible, the volunteers and congregational and community support are inspiring, and our donors are so very much appreciated! Sincerely,Marjore Thompson, M.A. , Board ChairThomp106 at gmail.com or 612-240-5796 Can You Help Us?Now that we are operating at full capacity, we need your financial support more than ever before!
