I apologize, but I have received no workable options to take over my coffee
cleanup duty on Sunday, and it looks like Bev can?t make it either. I
realize that the taco lunch is being held after service, so they will need
the kitchen.  Since I will be in Door County until Tuesday, all I can do is
apologize (especially to Chris Rollins) and owe a favor to whomever steps
in for me.

Come join in the fun! We will work (weed, spread wood chips, spruce up the play yard, tackle buckthorn etc) from 1-3:30 and then share in a potluck meal at 3:30. All ages are encouraged to attend. If some are free to stay we can play games, build a campfire, sing songs and share our dreams for our green spaces. 

We are changing the time of our potluck to 3:30 so that those who are attending a special auction event in the evening can participate in both activities. Also-2 hours of good work might be all most of us, at any age, can pull off. 

If you are planning on attending, please let Kristin Sanden or JanisTyler know or comment below so we can best plan for our time together. If you forget, you are welcome to just show up too!!

Need some volunteers, a pickup truck or trailer, and a Harland Village resident.

Well, it?s spring. Chances are there are babies. Kerry, do you have a dog? If not, an option is to live in harmony. Before it became illegal, skunks were popular pets. They would be descented. They can be litter box trained just like cats. I bet if you fed it, it would tolerate your presence. Unlike cats, they do not mind being on a leash. Maybe Google it.

Hello EVERYONE!

Rhiannon?s Graduation Open House
will be Sunday June 3 in our LCUUC social hall. And everyone at church is
invited. And your families. So spread the word!!

Rhiannon will be playing her alto saxophone along with some of her band
mates  from Kettle Moraine Charter for Arts and Performance. She may
perform a dance or two. We would like to invite any LCUUC youth home from
college to play something as well! If any of our church members who are
musically inclined would like to share a song or two for Ms. Rhiannon,
please let me know!

There will be plenty of Mexican food, great entertainment and Rhiannon
trivia! We will provide drinks and ice but not alcohol. You may coordinate
and bring your own. I know the Brewfest the previous evening if is left
over... ??

We are planning to begin around 430 to 500pm for food and drinks with music
getting underway closer to 600. A more definite time line will be sent out
soon along with RSVP option for our food  count.

If anyone wants to help me set up or prepare or serve food, please get in
touch!

Do you still have a list of phone numbers for assistance

if my memory serves me correctly when I called an animal removal service quite a while ago they then told me when they remove the animal they kill it...in my case it was a feral cat and three kittens so I chose to keep them on the property rather than have them killed

I agree with Fran because it's spring she might have babies.....but there might be a wildlife In need phone number where you can have them safely removed and relocated

I'm going to the museum leaving at around 3 in the afternoon looking at the exhibit which is closing on Sunday then going to a lecture at 6 and coming home after

also look up the exhibit on Milwaukee Art Museum and the lecture it's about the gilded Age in Milwaukee
This artist that is in the main show was not given much credit while he was alive because the impressionists had come in to popularity and so the realistic painters were discounted but trust me this guy's work is above and beyond amazing

..... It would be nice to share this event with someone else

We have two free dance tickets available for Rhiannon?s  dance recital at
the Oconomowoc arts Center tonight at 6 PM to 830.
Her 12th and final dance recital before she heads off to College.

If you haven?t seen the skunk, it might be a vixen. Foxes have a rather strong scent that has a whiff of skunk about it. Now a vixen and her kits would be a real treat.

Only one volunteer signed up after yesterday's pulpit plea, and the grass is
growing fast now!

 

I did the first mowing last week, Ric signed up for this week, and we need
weekly help after that.  Timely mowing is greatly appreciated so our
landscape doesn't turn into a hayfield!  

      

There is a signup sheet posted in the social hall, don't hold back!  Last
year with all the help we were once again able to avoid the expense of
hiring a contractor.  With the church's riding mower, it takes 3-4 hrs. to
complete, by the time the trimming and trash pickup is done.  We will need
3-4 signups per month for the growing season.  Please sign up, or let me
know if you are interested, even if you are not sure about exactly when you
can commit.  I am always available to provide tips and information for new
or experienced volunteers.

An Opportunity to Assist Asylum Seekers in Phoenix
 
A letter from SOPHIA volunteer and Immigration Task Force member, Ron Hopkins:
 I was in Phoenix, Arizona last February when the Asylum Seekers issue surfaced as front line national Immigration issue. I was both appalled and elated at the same time. Appalled by our President?s response. Elated that an immigration process was being followed to the letter of the law and that so many good people stepped forward to help the asylum seekers in their time of need. Please read on, we also have an opportunity to be one of the good people stepping forward to help. Here?s what is happening.    
   - Immigrants fleeing from life threatening violence and oppression are crossing the border and instead of fleeing from ICE agents, are actually seeking them out and asking for asylum as allowed under our laws.
   - Once this happened, ICE agents have no other legal option but to take them into custody. The asylum seekers then are taken to detention centers, where the only belongings they are allowed to keep are the clothes on their back.
   - There is an effort to keep mothers and children, fathers and sons together and they are placed in chain link fence enclosures with and open toilet as they await their ?credible fear? interview to determine if they are eligible for a court hearing to be granted asylum. This hearing usually happens within a few days.
   - If the Asylum Officer determines a credible fear of persecution, the asylum seeker will be scheduled for a hearing with an immigration judge on their asylum claim. It is true that these hearings are backlogged two to three years.
   - Next, the asylum seekers are given papers that allow them to legally, yes this needs to be repeated, legally, reside and work in the United States until their hearing date. They are given a ticket for transportation to go live with friends or relatives while awaiting their hearing date.
 Since ICE agents have taken away all their belongings, they are released into the Phoenix area with only the clothes on their backs. Area airports and bus terminals are overwhelmed and here is the wonderful response by people who care. Local churches and non-profits stepped forward and asked ICE to drop the asylum seekers off at their sites where they could stay for a few days until their ticket to travel was valid. As they arrived at these sites, they are met with open arms and human kindness for the first time since they crossed our border.    
Here is our opportunity to live out our faith and step forward to welcome the stranger among us. The churches and non-profits need clothing, personal items and packets of food to tide over the asylum seekers as they travel to their destination. This is an opportunity to help those on the front lines of our broken immigration system. Response to Anti-Muslim Event
 
Thank you to all who called and wrote the Waukesha County Expo Center and Waukesha County Executive's office in response to news that an Islamophobic conference would be taking place at the Expo Center on May 10 and 11. While the event was not cancelled, we raised awareness and our voices in support of our Muslim neighbors and the value of diversity in our community. SOPHIA partnered with other local organizations in releasing a joined statement yesterday afternoon to the media, Waukesha County Executive, Waukesha Mayor, all members of the Waukehsa Common Council, the head of police, Carroll College, and others. Stand Against Hate in Waukesha County

The Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee notes with concern the use of the Waukesha County Exposition Center this past weekend by a group purporting to be a ?Security Conference,? but with a roster of speakers who are known to have repeatedly engaged in virulent hate speech against Muslims as a group.

The IFCGM mourned with the Sikh community after the shooting in Oak Creek in 2012. In the last two years, we have prayed with the Muslim, Jewish and Christian communities after the violent events in Pittsburgh, California, Louisiana, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. We have stood in solidarity with our local communities of faith as America faces renewed waves of white supremacy, Islamophobia and antisemitism. We condemn all forms of speech that judge people on the basis of their race, religion, gender, or any other generalizing factor that ignores the dignity of the individual human being that underlies the solidarity of the human community.

We are concerned that individuals indulging in hate speech have come to consider Waukesha County a friendly venue. While we appreciate the issues that flow from public facilities and free speech, we note that there are limits to which groups are given the implicit support of facility use. We would encourage the Waukesha County government to review its facility use policies to determine whether such use accords with the values of Waukesha County and its voters. If Waukesha County is ?Leading the Way,? as its vision statement and logo proclaim, it must determine the direction that leadership is going in a time when minority groups are under increasing threat of persecution and violence.

We furthermore call upon the leadership of Waukesha County to issue statements explicitly affirming the welcome place of American Muslims and people of all minority races, religions, and ethnicities as residents of Waukesha County. Considering the virulence of the hate speech used in the past by the organizers and presenters who contracted to speak inside a county facility this past weekend, this intentional acknowledgment by our elected leaders of the contributions of American Muslims to the culture, civic life, and economy of Waukesha County is warranted.



The Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee is a 49-year-old nonprofit organization through which the regional leaders and adherents of 18 faiths and denominations: dialogue to build relationships; counter hate and fear with programming that fosters understanding, tolerance, and friendship; and work together on social issues to help create a better society for everyone.

Local Hartland artist Joel Pfiefer is putting together a 30-year commemorative clay stomp at Nixon Park on Saturday, June 15th.? A clay stomp is exactly what it sounds like - use your feet, your hands, your entire body to mix up clay to later be used for art.? When I was at AHS (and Joel was a teacher then), he would organize a clay stomp at the beginning of the school year, and that was the clay we used for the year.??
It's a wonderful community event and lots of fun - goes from noon-6pm.? Wear your grubbies!

The WISDOM &ldquo;Prison Prevention Workgroup&rdquo; 
 has requested that we all call our state legislators on Monday, May 20.Please contact your State Senator and State Assembly representative and ask them to prioritize a $15 million per year increase in TAD as they work on the new budget. To find your Representative and Senator and their contact information, click HERE and type in your address under &ldquo;Who Are My Legislators?&rdquo;
Ask your representatives to work to ensure that the new state budget includes a $15 million annual increase for Treatment Alternatives and Diversions (TAD). TAD allows counties to create or expand programs that are alternatives to jail or prison for people who the judge and prosecutor agree would be most appropriately sent to a treatment program to deal with their mental health and/or addiction issues. TAD programs have been studied and proven extremely effective, saving taxpayers more than $2 for every $1 they spend &ndash; AND they are more effective in deterring future crime.
Remind your representatives that Wisconsin&rsquo;s prisons are dangerously overcrowded and understaffed. To avoid a major crisis, we need to be smarter. We need to be sure that people who are ill and/or elderly can be released; we need Parole for the long-term people who have done the time the judge expected them to serve; we need to stop sending people back to prison for Crimeless Revocations, AND we need to increase TAD so that judges have a better option for people who need a mental health or addiction treatment.
 
It is important to contact your representative, no matter which political party they belong to.  As negotiations continue, we need the Legislature and Governor to see this as an urgent priority.

The first extended retreat offered by Kintsugi Sangha will happen soon, *Friday
May 31st through Sat Jun 1st.* We'll begin Friday 6:30PM lasting till
8:30PM. We will then resume on Sat Morning at 8:30AM concluding Sat evening
at 5:00PM.

To keep costs as low as possible, lunch on Sat will be a wabi sabi
potluck.There will be no food co-ordination provided so bring something you
would enjoy eating.  Coffee and tea will be available.

The Friday night session is essential as it will lay the groundwork and
provide instruction for what happens on Sat.

This is an opportunity to deepen your practice and an excellent way to
sharpen your focus. While a full day of silent meditation may seem
intimidating it will be broken up into different periods. Sat will be
periods of Zazen (seated meditation), Kinhin (walking meditation) yoga, and
Qi Gung. Dokusan (a private interview with the teacher) will also be
available.

There is no charge for the retreat. A bowl will be set out for financial
donations. *Registration deadline is Sunday May 26th.* For more information

Came across the Flow Hive, a bee hive you tap like a maple tree, sort of.
The bees and their comb aren't disturbed, makes the job much easier too.
Australians developed it with crowdfunding from Indiegogo where I got these

Has anyone seen or used anything like this before? Jim? Did it / would it
work? It'd be great if it got more people to keep bees.

 On May 3rd, We Energies filed an unfortunate proposal that would effectively tax their customers who make power for their own use with solar panels or other renewable energy systems. 
 
 We Energies? proposal, filed as part of their rate case at the Public Service Commission, revives a nearly-identical approach which was rejected by a Circuit Court Judge in 2015. 
 
 This time around, they?ve named their tax the ?Fixed Cost Recovery Charge.?? It would assess a charge of $3.53 per kilowatt of solar production, or about $180 per year for the average residential solar installation by We Energies? estimation. This would mean a reduction of 20-25% of the expected dollar savings from a typical solar installation. 
 
 The charge would be $3.67 per kilowatt for small commercial customers, and We Energies stated they are planning to propose a similar charge for larger commercial and industrial customers which has not yet been formally filed.

 Let?s Support Investments in Solar and Renewable Energy, Not Penalize Them 
 
 There are so many reasons to support solar power and oppose this solar tax! 
    
   -  Solar is a growing industry in Wisconsin. The industry already employs over 3,000 Wisconsinites, and it?s just getting started. 
   -  Homegrown energy keeps our money in Wisconsin.?According to the U.S. Energy Administration, Wisconsin ratepayers spent $700 million on natural gas and $893 million on coal to generate electricity in 2017. This is money sent out of state, since we have no coal or natural gas reserves. We should be encouraging private investments in homegrown energy generation like solar that keep our money in Wisconsin. 
   -  Clean energy brings economic development.?Leading businesses across Wisconsin?and the country increasingly want access to renewable energy. It?s going to be harder to attract these job creating businesses if our utilities are allowed to discourage them from investing in renewable energy solutions. 
   -  We should encourage private sector investment.?Individuals and businesses putting their own money into solar power and renewable energy systems is a good thing, and should not be penalized or discouraged. 
   -  Solar helps keep energy costs down.?With solar power, customers are providing peak power on those hot sunny days when we need it most. Every dollar invested by a person or business to generate their own energy lowers the demand on the entire system, and reduces the need for everyone to pay for more power plants and transmission lines to meet higher peak energy demands. 
   -  ALL solar is good.?We Energies itself is starting to offer solar power programs for some of its larger customers, and telling investors they plan to reshape their power generation to include more solar. We completely agree that We Energies should be maximizing the benefit of solar. But they can?t discourage solar while simultaneously talking about how great it is. ?What?s good for the goose is good for the gander.? 
   -  Solar helps families and businesses cut costs and manage expenses.Solar power has become an affordable way to save money for many families and businesses. We need to make sure farmers, residents, businesses, and even our local governments have the opportunity to take advantage of the cost savings from solar and renewable energy. 
   -  Solar promotes cleaner air and water, now and into the future. Right now, Wisconsin is still using coal for 50% of our power! We all know that leads to air pollution and that coal emits carbon dioxide. Solar power systems located on homes and businesses, and owned by Wisconsin citizens and businesses, can help clean up our air and water now and for generations to come.

LCUUC COMMUNITY GARDEN!
Out beautiful vegetable garden is ready for planting! And people! And parties!

Last year we were able to grow quite a lot of vegetables. We sold most of it at coffee hour after the service and donated the funds to the food pantry. We also had a fun outdoor zucchini potluck with our bountiful harvest.

Wednesday nights work well for me to meet up if you have time to come and help a little in the garden. And then stay around for some garden talk and happy hour!

I am always on the look out for ferns so if anybody is weeding ferns out of

Subject: [Lekooks] Family Promise Family Information Host Week June 2 - 9

Hello All!

We begin our Family Promise host week this Sunday June 2.  Thanks to all
who have supported Family Promise by volunteering or in any other
capacity!  All support is welcome and necessary to keep the program
successful. Please note that we are hosting at Church of the Resurrection
in Pewaukee.

*Current Guests:*

*Family #1:*  Tanya (head of household), Unique (female ?age 17), Jordair
(male ?age 5), Lailani (female ?age 4). Tanya is working at a hotel in
Brookfield.Unique has started a job at Brookfield Square.  Unique does her
schooling online and the younger children attend Parklawn Elementary School
in Oconomowoc.

*Family #2*:Jose Gutierrez (head of household), Aliya ( female age 9), Tony
(male age 7), Marcel (age 5). Jose is looking for work.

*Family #3:*. *TENTATIVELY TO JOIN US MONDAY*....a Spanish only speaking
mom with 2 month old twins and a 3 and 4 year old.  *Our guest Jose has
graciously volunteered to interpret.  Let us know if you are a Spanish
speaker and can help out.  Unsure of our needs at this time....

SUNDAY Meal Prep and Serve Volunteers please note:  Jose and his family
will be joining us on Sunday, but will not arrive at church until 6 pm.

We have been told that our families are very nice and very grateful for
this assistance and that they get along well.  The children all play
together and they like to play outdoors when possible.  They are good
eaters and very helpful.

Remember our motto....Be kind and be flexible!  I will be in touch with any
changes asap.  I will let you all know about Family #3 as soon as I hear.

There is still ONE open overnight shift on Wednesday....please consider
it?!  Or if that night doesn't work, contact Laurin and see if you can take
one of hers?
