Come Saturday at 6pm before the live auction or if you can't attend, stop by church any time or message me that you want me to sign you up 1. *Expedition to the End of the World movie and talk back with arctic researcher, *Morten Rasch. Many years ago (before kids) Greg and I were fortunate to meet Morten and then travel to Greenland to visit him and his family while he was stationed there as director of the Arctic research station. Greenland is an amazingly beautiful place and Morten is a very interesting person who is a wealth of knowledge on the arctic and climate change and also a spiritual seeker with an interest in Buddhism. The movie is part a view into the life of a field researcher and part reflections on life. He is also Danish, which might be of interest to those of you taking the Happiness course. We will watch the movie and then Skype with Morten. He is donating the movie and his time to us so I really hope we can have a nice number of people gathered Here is the trailer again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsogqNI6_rM Also, here is a recent video that features their research hut, Morten and the Disco Bay where he does his research. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvPUKhfTCb0&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR1usLwjYezWiRpT3lBNGIzRxmvQwO2v7mhjHodFb66Ihpsvh-wrkzAJa58-- If there is strong interest but the date is no good, we can consider moving it 2. *Murder Mystery Party.* We need a minimum of 14 people to make this a go! We have done these a few times in the past and it is a lot of fun. This form of Murder Mystery party is not like some others-there are no lines to memorize or performances. It is more like a live game of clue where you mingle with others at the party, while staying in character, to gather information, form deals, make alliances, achieve goals and figure out "who done it" and more. Adults and teens can play. See you all Saturday! Kristin Sanden -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The U.S. EPA's Office of Research and Development's "Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (TEAM) Study" (Volumes I through IV, completed in 1985) found levels of about a dozen common organic pollutants to be up to 10 times higher inside homes than outside, regardless of whether the homes were located in rural or highly industrial areas. TEAM studies indicated that while people are using products containing organic chemicals, they can expose themselves and others to very high pollutant levels, and elevated concentrations can persist in the air long after the activity is completed. What's a person to do? The answer, according to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) research is a most sophisticated pollution-absorbing device: The common houseplant. Elizabeth is a gifted teacher who focuses on helping people become more resilient - using stress management, mindfulness, HeartMath, forgiveness, art - and even more modalities. Elizabeth and I will be offering a day-long self-care retreat at LCUUC on Saturday, February 2, entitled, "Self-Compassion: Learn to be Kinder to Yourself". We are limiting enrollment to 20 people, so this will fill up. I wanted to give you all the info, in case you'd like to offer this to yourself, or perhaps give it as a gift to someone you love. It's sure to be an affirming and enriching experience. Please let me know if you have any questions. Kerry *SELF-COMPASSION: LEARN TO BE KINDER TO YOURSELF* *A Yoga and Meditation Self-Care Retreat* *With Elizabeth Lewis & Kerry Duma* Saturday, February 2, 2019 9am ? 4pm $80 (there will be an hour break mid-day ? please bring a lunch or you can get food nearby) *Cost:* $80 When we feel compassion for others, we feel kindness toward them, empathy, and a desire to help reduce their suffering. But often, we struggle to offer the same compassion to ourselves. Self-compassion means offering kindness and understanding to yourself during difficult times; it means recognizing your inner resource of wisdom, resilience and strength, and understanding that suffering, failure and imperfection are part of the shared human experience. Self-compassion is not self-indulgence ? it is self-care, confirmed by research as the cornerstone of emotional health and healing. In this yoga and guided meditation workshop we will guide you in learning practices that will help you cultivate self-compassion, including breath-work, meditation, yoga, journaling; and more. All exercises presented during the class are designed for all levels of experience ? beginners welcome! *Facilitators:* *Elizabeth Lewis** is trained in a variety of stress resilience modalities including mindfulness-based stress reduction, HeartMath and forgiveness facilitation Elizabeth?s goal is to help people access their inner healer by increasing their resilience ? the capacity to prepare for, recover from and adapt in the face of stress, challenge and adversity. * *Kerry Duma,** RYT-500, has been teaching yoga since 2003. Her classes emphasize a mindful approach to movement with optimal alignment, breath and inner awareness. Her goal is to help people connect with their body and its innate desire to be healthy. She believes in the power of yoga to help us connect with our inner wisdom and be open to all possibilities.* *To register on-line go to: www.kerrydumayoga.com * *Questions, Contact Kerry Duma *at 262-470-1440 or kerryduma at gmail.com * Or Elizabeth Lewis* at 262-243-9602, elizabethlewis at wi.rr.com or www.elizabeth-lewis-coach.com *CLASS MAXIMUM 20: EARLY REGISTRATION SUGGESTED!* Virus-free. www.avast.com <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In a report released Friday, the nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Forum found the state would need an additional $2.2 billion over the next two years to continue its existing programs. State revenue is unlikely to increase by that much. It is imperative that Wisconsin expand Medicaid and accept the $200 million dollars per year in additional federal aid. The hostile legislature that Tony Evers must deal with next year is going to refuse to do this. We cannot wait until next year to show our support for accepting the Medicaid funding. Work on the budget has already begun. Our legislators need to hear from us now. Talking points * Medicaid expansion would insure an additional 80,000 people in addition to returning $200 million to our treasury. * The federal Medicaid expansion funds are our tax dollars. * All other Midwest states have accepted the money. * Mention, if you like, the financial mismanagement created by the Foxconn, the Manufacturing Tax credit, and the unaccountable Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation giveaways. Last year we raked them onto some large tarps and dragged them to the field east of the south parking lot (two years ago the wind blew them away so we didn't have to do anything with them). Assuming they don't blow away this year, I am asking for your help raking and dragging them THIS SATURDAY AT 3:00 PM. Please bring leaf rakes and tarps if you can. I will send out a message if it rains or if the leaves blow away. Thanks for any and all help, Gerry Flakas -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They have initiated a program whose goal is to make Waukesha County a "Zero Waste Community", where none of our household and business wastes wind up in landfills. A first step in this initiative is a request to "Skip the Straw", since plastic drinking straws are not recycled, and are a prime example of unnecessary waste. Here is WEAL ?description of the program: WEAL Asks Members and Waukesha County Residents to ?Skip the Straw? ? As a component of WEAL?s Goal Zero Waste: Waukesha County Initiative, WEAL is asking our members, and the general public, to join a global movement and ?Skip the Straw.?? WEAL is also asking establishments serving beverages in Waukesha County to enact a ?straw upon request? policy with a plan to transition to reusable or biodegradable alternatives for customers who ask to have a straw. Plastic straws may seem harmless but they contribute to the more than 150 metric tons of plastics in the world?s oceans.? Reducing the amount of discarded plastic is crucial because if nothing is done by 2050 the oceans will have more plastics than fish. Plastic straws are not collected for recycling and eventually end up in landfills, incinerators, along roadsides or in oceans, rivers, lakes and streams.? They are also one to the top ten items collected during coastal cleanups according to the Ocean Conservancy. Plastic straws do not biodegrade they photodegrade into microplastics which can take more than 200 years. Microplastic fragments can be easily ingested by fish, birds and other wildlife and ultimately enter the food chain. There are no precise figures on how many plastic straws are used each day in the United States. Estimates range from 375 million to 500 million. To put how many plastic straws are discarded every year in perspective, Disney estimates 175 million plastic straws are used annually at their properties and is switching to paper straws. On a smaller scale, the Modern Honolulu and the Hilton Waikoloa Village in Hawaii tracked their plastic straw usage and found between the two hotels 1.4 million plastic straws were used in 2017.? Both hotels now only offer paper straws upon request.? Plastic Straw Regulations and Bans in the US and Around the World Plastic Straw initiatives or bans are being enacted, or considered, across the globe. Island nations and coastal cities that are most impacted by single-use plastic pollution are spearheading efforts to ?skip the straw.? Coastal communities understand plastic straws, and other single-use plastic items threaten the environment and as litter they are a deterrent for tourism.??? The state of California recently enacted legislation requiring dine-in restaurants to only give straws when requested. Statewide plastic straw bans are being considered in Hawaii, New Jersey and New York. A number of cities in the United States have banned plastic straws. Seattle?s ban on plastic straws and utensils went into effect on July 1st.? In California, Monterrey, Malibu and Berkley have recently approved banning plastic straws.? In Florida St. Petersburg, Miami Beach and Fort Myers Florida have also approved plastic straw bans. The United Kingdom is proposing a ban on plastic straws, drink stirrers and cotton buds. Queen Elizabeth II has already banned plastic straws and bottles from all royal estates.? Scotland plans to ban plastic straws by the end of 2019.? Belize plans to phase out plastic straws, shopping bags and plastic utensils by April, 2019 and Taiwan is planning to eliminate the use of plastic straws, bags and utensils by 2030. Numerous restaurants, bars, hotel chains, cruise lines, airlines and other venues have decided to no longer offer plastic straws.?? Several sports arenas, including the Milwaukee Bucks new stadium, have also decided not to offer plastic straws. What Can You Do? Ask yourself if you routinely use straws for beverages consumed at home, or for beer or wine? If the answer is ?no? why use a straw when you are away from home? Although reusable and biodegradable straws are the best options to replace plastic, it is always preferable to Skip the Straw altogether and just drink from a glass.? Not using a plastic straw won?t eliminate plastic pollution and litter, but this action raises awareness about environmental issues associated with single-use plastic items and encourages people to think about their impact on the environment.? If you agree plastic straws contribute to pollution and litter, and believe not using a plastic straw is a good idea, WEAL is asking you to ?skip the straw.? Helpful Tips When ordering a beverage, let your server know you do not wish to have a straw. Placing a plastic straw in beverages has become a routine. If you receive a straw when you asked not to have one, don?t get upset.? Use the unwanted straw as an opportunity to mention why you have decided to ?skip the straw.? WEAL believes the time is right for establishments serving beverages to enact a ?straw upon request policy? and give customers a choice on whether or not to have one. WEAL also supports phasing out plastic straws in favor of reusable or biodegradable straws. Alternatives to Plastic Straws There are a number of alternatives to plastic straws.? Good quality paper straws are available, but will cost more than plastic straws. To keep costs down for your favorite restaurants, just ask not to have a straw. Some restaurants and bars across the country are offering reusable straws made from bamboo, steel, glass or silicone. Creative alternatives like pasta and reeds are also becoming popular, but keep in mind the most environmentally beneficial option is no straw. Beverage serving establishments must be sensitive to the needs of disabled customers and not question why anyone is requesting a straw.? In addition to having biodegradable straws upon request, beverage serving venues can purchase a small supply of reusable steel straws with silicone tips, or keep a few packages of plastic straws on hand to provide acceptable options for all customers who request straws. If you don?t want to ask for a straw but prefer to use one, you can always bring your own.? There are a number of options available that include a case and cleaning brush.? One steel straw even folds into a case that can be put in a pocket, a purse or attached to a key chain. Next Steps? If you know of any establishment in Waukesha County that has already enacted a ?straw upon request? policy, please let WEAL know by contacting www.weal.org.?? WEAL would like to recognize these establishments on our website, Facebook page and in newsletter articles.?? Stay Informed WEAL will be posting new information on the WEAL website and Facebook page, please share information on reducing single-use plastics with your family and friends. In the meantime, ?skip the straw? and enjoy drinking from a glass! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... At the Hope Center Auction last Thursday, I won 4 Packers tickets to the Dec. 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons. I did not know the date of the game when I bid on them at the live auction and am traveling home from Argentina that day and cannot attend. I wanted to give this opportunity to my church Packer fan friends before reselling on StubHub, etc. The seats are in the Miller Lite End Zone , supposedly a fun place, - Section 302 (Upper Bowl) Row 7, Seats 21 22 23 24. Face Value is $109 and similar tickets are going for about that on Stubhub of course before all their fees. The package also includes a round trip coach bus ride from the Milwaukee area with the other winner of 4 tickets, so there would only be eight of you on the bus. I don?t have all the details on the bus but it will probably leave by 8 or 9am. I am just looking to cover the costs so the price would be $150 each for game ticket and bus. I really need to take care of this this week before I go to Argentina for two weeks so please respond as soon as you can if you are interested. We could use some other helping hands, if you are able for an hour or so. This is what it involves: We rake the leaves from the "intense" pileup areas, into piles. (mostly just the areas we mow). Then we rake those leaves into some tarps, and haul the leaves over to our taller grass area. That's it. Helen will bring a couple rakes, and one big ole tarp. So, join us if you can please, bring a rake, if you can. and maybe another tarp if you have one. It goes fairly quickly, (in the past it was 5 of us, about an hour and half.) any questions, contact Helen Arens Bera -mhbera at gmail.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I understand from speaking with the current host church that this is very nice group of guests, they are very appreciative and polite. *Our Families:* *Family #1*: Rosa (head of household), John (male age 13), Jenasia (female age 11). Rosa is looking for employment. John is attending Kettle Moraine Middle School, and Jenasia is attending Magee Elementary. They did not sign a photo release. *Family #2*: Ian (co-??head of household), Kacie (co-??head of household, pregnant), Austin (male ? age 1 year). Kacie is working at Subway. Ian is working at Generac. *Families #3 and 4*: We are currently in the process of interviewing several candidate families. (A family with a single mom and 2 and 5 year olds has begun the interview process and may join us?) The families will begin their week with us this Sunday, December 2. Both of our families own their own cars so we will need to be attentive to the Family Schedule document for daily arrival and departure times. That document will be in the kitchen along with other important information. Ian works third shift and Kacie drives him to work so she is gone from 10:30 - 11:30 pm. Another guest is responsible for their son during that time, although he should be sleeping while she is away. Since our school age children attend school locally, we need to respect our guest's privacy and volunteer children who attend those same schools should not participate this time around. (Sorry for any inconvenience.) All emergency information and the Volunteer Coordinator On Call Schedule can be found on the refrigerator. If, at any time during your shift, you have a question or a concern please do not hesitate to call the Volunteer Coordinator. If it is a true emergency, dial 911 and then notify the Coordinator. St Nick Night is during our week and there are plans for some small gifts for the children. Contact Gina for more information. I will be in touch with additional updates, but wanted to share this much as soon as possible. As always, your support as volunteers is what makes this program so successful.................Thank You!!! gina magnus 262-424-7640 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: Thru work I'm getting two free tickets to this Wednesday night's 7pm Bucks v Pistons game. They're supposed to be good seats. Someone said 20th row but I can't believe that's right. (If it is they don't pay me enough.) I'm not so much interested in the game as checking out the Forum. In fact, maybe only *moderate* Bucks fans should reply. I'd like to do as much socializing and exploring as keeping track off who's doing what with the big orange ball. ???????? Anyone? I'll drive and throw in a tutorial on electric cars too. (Lovin' the software updates I'm getting for my newish model 3.) Take care, Liz -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
