UUly Yours, James Wm Hansen ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- From: "MidAmerica Region UUA" To: "Mr. James Hansen" Subject: Chalice Lighters Call - Spring 2018 Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2018 11:57:04 -0400 Dear Mr. James Hansen, It’s been five years since the Chalice Lighter programs of the former Heartland, Central Midwest, and Prairie Star districts were combined to form the MidAmerica Region Chalice Lighters Program. In that time, congregations from around the region have received thousands of dollars in grants funded by your generosity. The time has come to reassess the program, which we’ll be doing over the next year. Our goal is to reformulate the program so that congregations can receive even larger grants for starting new congregations, acquiring meeting space, securing a minister, religious educator, or other professional staff, or providing for outreach and public relations. And as part of the selection process, the committee will be looking for proposals that are feasible, sustainable, and accountable. We’ll keep you informed about any changes in the program in the 2018-19 Chalice Lighter Call letters. For the 2018 Spring Call, the MidAmerica Region Chalice Lighter Committee received eight applications—a record number! We are pleased to announce that these three have been chosen for this Chalice Lighter call: The Bismarck Mandan Unitarian Universalist Fellowship & Church in North Dakota will be receiving funds to hire a half-time clergy to provide ministerial support and guidance with the goal of developing a thriving congregation. The Open Circle Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, will also be receiving funds to assist the fellowship in moving their quarter time minister to half time. And the Second Unitarian Church of Omaha, Nebraska, will receive grant money to build two accessible and gender-neutral bathrooms. For this Call, please donate by June 15, 2018 We thank you for your support of the growth of Unitarian Universalism in our Region! There are several ways you can participate in the Chalice Lighter program, with four suggested levels of donation. These are amounts that would be donated three times each year (Fall, Winter & Spring Calls) upon receipt of the Call Letter. $20 Believer $50 Builder $100 Benefactor $250 Beacon There are several ways you can donate: Mail a check as described below Donate online per call or Annually You can make the check out to MidAmerica Region, with a note “Chalice Lighters Spring 2018 Call” in the memo line and mail it to: MidAmerica Region, 2355 Fairview Avenue #312, Roseville, MN 55113 If you’d prefer, for tax purposes, to make one donation per year (please send the $60 minimum donation or any greater amount to be divided among the next three Calls) you can send in your check now, and we will hold the funds and divide them equally across the three Calls. If you want to make an annual donation, please be sure to note “Annual” in the memo field of your check. For those of you who are annual donors, you are receiving a Call Letter and will receive subsequent letters to keep you updated on what your funds are being used for. You are not being asked to send more money once you have made your annual donation for a given calendar year unless you wish to do so. Again, please know that we and the congregations who have and will receive Chalice Lighter Grants are deeply grateful for your generosity! Allowing hateful folks like these to spread a skewed vision and/or hateful lies about the religion of Islam and of Muslims in general will not reflect well on your establishment. It is the Oconomowoc Food Pantry's largest drive and will bring in a great deal of the food that will get us through the summer months. All of the food that is collected locally stays in Oconomowoc. (This is the drive where you fill a bag with food items and hang it on your mailbox for pick up.) There are MANY MANY opportunities to help. We can use adults, teens and supervised youth. We need everything from drivers to follow mail trucks and pick up food to delivery and food sorting, etc, etc.... Most of the opportunities to help are on the actual day (Sat May 12) but sorting and moving of the food does go on for days following the drive as well. Please let me know if you are interested and I will share more details. Thanks much, gina magnus 262-424-7640 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The facility is easily located in Waukesha near the Good Harvest Market on the north west side of Waukesha. Updated status of Robin, from today's visit. Robin is one of the founders of LCUUC. His profession wasworking with marionette puppets. Along with his wife and sons, he livedin Wales, WI for many years. I have known Robin for the past 19years. He is also an artist, church choir member, he did social action at ourchurch, did up the signs for us when LCUUC held services in Wales. Icould go on. His room has family pictures, and paper copies of hisartwork. Robin was in the hospital recently, but is better now, and hasbeen back at Heritage Court Memory Care facility in Waukesha. This puts an extra burden on home owners and small businesses. Big Box stores utilize far more of a municipality's resources yet pay far lower property taxes. I urge you to write to your Wisconsin State senator and representative regarding this issue. Below is the letter I just sent off. Dear Sen. Kapenga and Rep. Duchow, Please follow the lead of the Indiana state legislature and pass legislation in Wisconsin closing off tax strategies that allow big box stores to pay very low property taxes which shifts the tax burden to home owners and small businesses that own their property. Pass legislation prohibiting assessors from valuing thriving big box stores the same as abandoned buildings in a different market segment. This should be a bipartisan issue. I look forward to hearing your stand on the Dark Store loophole in Wisconsin. Sincerely, Fran Bills 1522 Milwaukee St. Delafield, WI 53018 Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone. You might be interested to know that Chris will be on the "Megyn Kelly TODAY" show tomorrow (Wed.) morning. While the show airs at 9:00 am EST, I believe it's recorded and rebroadcast at 10:00 around here. It's a bit of a long story as to how this came about, but here's my stab at the short-and-sweet of it. She wrote an article about her efforts to raise our adoptive son, Kai, who came to us with a host of issues, and also trying to do this after her rock climbing fall and subsequent amputation, and submitted it to the Huffington Post. I think she was looking to have people learn to reach out a compassionate and understanding hand to folks in tough circumstances much as the parents of the adoptive shooter at the recent FL high school could probably have used. The Post responded the same day saying they wanted to publish it and, after some back-and-forth editing, they posted it last Monday. The producer for Megyn Kelly contacted Chris (through Leann R., I believe) that same day saying they wanted her on the show if she was okay with it. Chris said 'Yes' and it's been quite a flurry of activity since. We had a NBC Chicago-affiliate video team at our home last Friday telling us to "just be yourselves" with household activities while they filmed us. I got Chris to the airport today and now she's chillin' in the Big Apple. I'm going to stay home in the morning and attempt to live-stream it on our TV at the actual air-time (8:00 for us) and have our kids watch it, too. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Hope you are all doing well. Scott Morgan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Apparently, they can arrange to supply 50% or 100% of your electricity from renewable sources, simply by signing up with them online. See the website?https://www.arcadiapower.com/. This sounds almost too good to be true; do any of you have any experience with Arcadia Power, or know anyone who has? I put this on the LCUUC Facebook page yesterday, but received no response. Either nobody read it, or understood it, or don't care. In the last case, I guess we shouldn't consider it. We have our solar PV system which delivers 2/3 of our electricity consumption to the WE Energies grid, but the energy we receive from the grid via WE Energies is only 10% renewable and 90% from fossil fuels. The article mentioned Arcadia Power as a way to increase the renewable portion. Apparently the way it works is that the customer pays their utility bill to Arcadia, which claims to provide 50% (or 100% for a $0.015 / khw surcharge), and pays the balance owed to the WE Energies. Apparently, for no surcharge, Arcadia would provide 50% renewable electricity to us; if this is actually 1/3 of our electricity, our total renewable percentage, which is now about 70%, would be about 83%. If we paid the surcharge, which would amount to around $400 per year for us, LCUUC would be 100% renewable. So again, is there any interest in LCUUC switching over to Arcadia, in particular paying the surcharge to be 100% renewable? And do any of you have any experience with Arcadia, or can recommend someone who has? Thanks, Gerry Flakas -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... View this email in your browser logo [image: WIRED Magazine] 4.25.18 Take a peek at your Gmail settings?notice some new options? Starting today, you'll be able to "snooze" emails to make sure you don't forget about that important email you opened on your phone, "nudge" yourself to reply to long-neglected messages, and use Gmail's AI-powered "smart replies," currently only available on mobile, on your web browser. And over the next few weeks, Google will start letting users set emails to "self-destruct" after a certain amount of time, prevent recipients from forwarding or downloading a message, and require recipients to enter a code before opening an email. Many of the new tools already exist in a hodgepodge of of plugins, but by bringing them to main Gmail app, Klint Finley writes, Google is delivering some much-needed task management and security features to its massive user base. This is the first major update to Gmail in years , and it's long overdue. Gmail revolutionized email when it launched in 2004, but it has introduced few changes in its 14-year existence. So why now? As Finley reports, Gmail is facing mounting competition from technologies like Slack, text messaging, and video chat, and it's in Google's best interest to start helping users feel more productive and secure while using its service. "In 2020 I don't want to be saying 'I use Gmail plus Slack plus Evernote plus Zoom,'" says Alan Lepofsky, an analyst at the digital strategy firm Constellation Research. The original asking price was $15 per person, but we have had a few people who paid and can?t make it, so those spots are available, first come-first served. We?ll have a soup lunch and get right to work as soon after service as makes sense. The class will last until around 2:00. Please let me know if we can expect you by replying to kimsuhr at mac.com . See you Sunday! Maybe you aren't quite sure but believe that silence is not an option. Maybe you want to give voice to the voiceless. Maybe it?s time you were heard. In this workshop, we'll look at examples of writing that has contributed to a shift in people?s attitudes and behaviors. We?ll discuss building credibility, crafting a compelling narrative and connecting with readers in a meaningful way to foster the type of world you?d like to live in. Then we?ll look at possible venues for your words and how to best approach these publications/websites. This workshop is not intended to support one political perspective or cause over others, and differing viewpoints will be respected. Apparently, they can arrange to supply 50% or 100% of your electricity from renewable sources, simply by signing up with them online. See the website https://www.arcadiapower.com/. I really don?t want to give up dairy, I love Wisconsin?s cheeses, but the facility the approval of this permit allows is not good for the environment or nice to the dairy cows that will live there, all 5,800 of them on the 128 acres. Imho, feedlots should be outlawed. If there isn?t the space and quality of grasses to allow the animals (cows, pigs, chickens, whatever) to range feed, then there aren?t the resources to raise them and we should just do without. It is wireless. It?s old but works and comes with a color ink cartridge. Also have an Epson Scanner. Both were used for Jeff?s business and we no longer need them. Let me know if you are interested. If no one wants them they will go to the thrift store this Friday. Thanks, Donna Grzelak 414-745-1955 Sent from my iPhone -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
