The Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee is proud to be among those community partners. One benefit is to spotlight relevant films from underrepresented communities to our members and the other is to inspire awareness and conversation through the medium of film. At the start of the Culture's and Communites film festival, Pardeep Singh Kaleka and Cherrie Hanson were invited to a virtual panel with Leana Nakielski, director of strategic partnerships at American Family Insurance and Alberto Maldonado, director at the Roberto Hernandez Center at UWMilwaukee, to explore the significance of belonging, the fluidity of multilayered individuality, and the impact of cultural, racial and religious identity on intergroup relations. </p><p style="text-align: center;">Cine Sin Fronteras (<em data-redactor-tag="em">Cinema Without Borders)</em> explores issues surrounding identity, culture, family, history, and modernity within the Latinx diaspora, including stories from the Chicanx, Latin American, Indigenous, and Afro-Latinx communities.<br> National Hispanic Heritage Month during Sepember and October, films are dedicated to celebrate, honor, and elevate Latinx culture and traditions.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><img style="width: 400px; height: 572px;" src="https://interfaithconference.org/uploads/editor/images/Screen%20Shot%202021-09-24%20at%2010_39_12%20AM.png" alt=""></p><p style="text-align: center;">A solar storm batters Central America for five days knocking out all power and internet service. Days of Light chronicles the effect of life without light and power. The six separate narratives are impactful ellipses of faith, hope and love. Not knowing the cause or when the power would return put individual's character, ego and mental health to the test. Ironically, only six weeks ago, Milwaukee County lost power to more than 225,000 homes due to a intense storm. It was the biggest outage We Energies had ever seen and many of us didn't know how long it would take to resolve. Moments in Days of Light reminded me of how differently people grappled with the outage, the hardships were not equal. </p><p style="text-align: center;">The film is directed with an expert use of visual storytelling, reminiscent of American films of the 1970's. The minimal, efficient dialogue encouraged a provocative experience often lacking in the average spoon-fed blockbuster. It's not loud, flashy or manic, but it will likely leave you craving discussion.
