We’re working to provide the information and skills necessary so that 54 Nicaraguan Youth can receive training in project management and design, with the end goal of implementing projects across each of their communities.

This camp is a unique opportunity for Nicaraguan youth. Nicaragua is the poorest country in Latin America, and while education is free though high school, there are few opportunities for extracurricular leadership activities. In many places, Peace Corps volunteers fulfill these roles, creating youth environmental brigades, providing interactive sex ed, managing business competitions, and creating English book clubs. However, Peace Corps’ ultimate goal is to build capacity. Our limited time in country allows us only so much direct impact. Because of this, it’s imperative that we train the next generation of Nicaraguan youth to design, implement, and manage their own community projects.

Development begins at a community level, and is contingent on well trained, enthusiastic community members who can visualize and break down a problem into it core components, and then come up with imaginative solutions. The Design for Change program, begun in India, is an interactive series of workshops that can be tailored to many project design programs. We’re trying to bring the curriculum to a new level: camp style. We’ll spend five days in early February teaching the curriculum through a series of interactive workshops, interspersed with some good old-fashioned camp games. We hope that bringing together youth from across Nicaragua will spark new ideas, and that a combination of leadership, team building and project management will spark the desire to create change at an individual level.

Youth Leadership Camp 2017 is partnering with the YMCA of Nicaragua to implement the Design for Change curriculum, but we need your help to make this camp happen.
