will be meeting this Friday, May 13 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Milwaukee Street
Traders (523 Milwaukee St. in Delafield). Below are two TED Talks
on a the latest in gene editing technology (thanks for the recommendations
Fran!)- a door has opened to allow us to make unbelievable changes in genes more
easily than previously imagined.Lots to discuss here , esp. on the ethics
of changing species, risks of unintended consequences............... The
third talk on stress is one that the presenter believes can add years to your
life- well worth watching and one of the 20 most popular TED Talks of all time.
As always feel free to bring a suggestion for us.

gene drives allow scientists to change sequences of DNA and guarantee that the
resulting edited genetic trait is inherited by future generations, opening up
the possibility of altering entire species forever. More than anything, the
technology has led to questions: How will this new power affect humanity? What
are we going to use it to change? Are we gods now? Join journalist Jennifer Kahn
as she ponders these questions and shares a potentially powerful application of
gene drives: the development of disease-resistant mosquitoes that could knock
out malaria and Zika.

Jennifer Doudna co-invented a groundbreaking new technology for editing genes,
called CRISPR-Cas9. The tool allows scientists to make precise edits to DNA
strands, which could lead to treatments for genetic diseases ... but could also
be used to create so-called "designer babies." Doudna reviews how CRISPR-Cas9
works — and asks the scientific community to pause and discuss the ethics of
this new tool.

<SPAN
